Letter from Leo A. McNamee to A. S. Halsted, July 8, 1922

Dear Sir: Your wire of the 6th in answer to mine of the same date was not delivered until yesterday, while I was out of the City. On the 6th I wrote to the Sheriff and talked with him personally, urging upon him the necessity of keeping order. He had talked to Mr. Hatter the evening previous and has promised to appoint as deputies any persons we may suggest and who are qualified. (Our law prohibits the appointment of any person except Residents, as deputy Sheriffs). He also assisted Special Agent Gregg to procure from the County Commissioners a permisson to carry fire arms. He has appointed a few of the strikers as deputies. I talked with Judge Orr, our District Judge, to ascertain his sentiments, and as whether or not he would issue an injunction should the occasion arise. He stated that it would depend upon the showing we could make; that if facts warranted it he would issue one without notice. I have sufficient confidence in the Judge but do not believe the Sheriff would make arrests in case of a violation of the order. I will say this for the Sheriff, he will do what he can to keep down violence, and he told me that last night he and two of our deputies went down into the yards, gathered up all of the pickets that were there, and he gave them a talking to, which resulted in their going home.
