My Dear Friend: I hasten to express to you my sympathy in the loss of our dear friend and you esteemed husband, the news of which comes to us all as a great shock. It has not been very long since we passed through all the anxiety of his expected death, but since he recovered, we had come to feel that he would be a part of us for time indefinite, so that perhaps any one of us might be called first; and now that the summons comes'so suddenly, it seems like a great calamity has befallen us. Hamp was a man of trusting friends, and he was deserving of all the trust that he re­ceived. And now we must miss him. I feel it for myself, yet I know that my interest is nothing compared to yours; Sometimes it seems like he had a work to accomplish before he could be spared from this world of doubt and uncertainty, and that the Ruler of All extended his life at the former time in order that he might be able to fulfil his mission. T feel confident that you will bear up under this bereavement with the same fortitude that characterized you in the past danger and trouble, and I sincerely hope that you will be prosperous, happy, and contented in the future. Of course it will take a period of time for the shock of the bereavement to wear off, and then I ber-lieve that you will rise to the necessities of your new conditions.
