Dear S ir : During my absence in the c it y the l a t t e r p art o f la s t week my o f f ic e was broken into and the cash drawer forced open, and $66.70 sto len therefrom . When le a v in g f o r Los Angeles on the 13th I l e f t $20.00 change in the cash drawer f o r the housekeeper and the money taken was th is change and water rent c o lle c tio n s f o r those two days. This was done by someone who knows w e ll that along about the 15th i s our busy time w ith water ren ts. a f t e r 11 P.M. as Mrs. Feetham, the housekeeper, was in here at that time b e fo re going to bed and everything was a l l rig h t . As soon as she camO in in the morning and discovered the door had been jimmied and the Ca^h taken, she phoned f o r Agent Heaton and the S h e r iff and they came down and looked th in gs over, but there seemed to be no sign s o f any clue and we are out to the amount o f $66.70 and a broken door, which I have had fix e d . n eglect or c arelessn ess e ith e r o f mine or the housekeeper’ s, I do mot think X should be required to make i t up. Having no s a fe I always keep the money c lo s e ly deposited in the bank and the th ieves would not have gotten as much as they did, only f o r the fac t that they knew and came at a time when water rents were being paidi Mr. Heaton and statement from Mrs. Peetham, the house* keeper, concerning th is robbery, and would ask that you k in d ly send me the proper a u th o rity to show th is lo s s in my cash remittance on our form 6 when making up the w ater rent statement f o r th is month, f o r without th is a u th o rity I w i l l have to make up the shortage.
