Los Angeles - October 2£th* 19*& :Airmail; Mr. W. M. J e ffe r s: 3 -V jy . I went over the ground with Mr. Bracken la s t week, and recommend as follow s: 1. Purchase the Southeast Quarter of Section 31» Township 20 South, Range 6 l East, containing approximately 16 1.3 acres, and whioh is verbally offered at $50*00 per aore. This quarter-section adjoins our present holdings on the south* and in accordance with geological survey made by Mr. R. 0. Greene* apparently o v erlies the two zones from which the Railroad Company i s now producing water for i t s shop and Las Vegas c ity supply* and i t s purchase has been previously reoommended. may not have immediate heed for d r illin g upon this we quarter^seotion* but owing to the rather Intense a c tiv ity in both resid en tia l and small acreage subdivision proje c ts , i t seems advisable to acquire th is property to prevent p o s s ib ility of a development whioh may bring about d r illin g thereon that would immediately tend to drain our resources. Cost would be about $£*100. W.O. 1537-1 has an unexpended balance of about $7*500 for such purohase. 2. Arrange with Mr. McAullffe for the design of ohlorlnatlng f a c il i t i e s that w ill permit use for domest ic purposes of the water from Middle Spring* whioh water i s now flowing to waste* and promptly conatruot such f a c i l i t i e s . This recommendation is mpds* not only for the reason that the water is worth saving from an economical standpoint, but for the further reason that ws are in a bad position to urge upon others the discontinuance of waste when we allow some 300*000 to *K)b,000 gallons per day from this spring to flow through open ditch to the Ranoh property. It is true a portion of this water serves a useful purpose in irrigating the Ranch* but the flow Is subject to appreciable loss through peroo-lation and evaporation. This situation* I feel* tends to destroy the effectiveness of our campaign to curb waste. There is no outstanding authority for this cost. H.J. 29 1941 ( 1 )
