Las Vegas, Nevada June 20, 1951 W M , be JUL 5 1 Mr. Reinhardt: While discussing the Las Vegas water situation yesterday with Oity Manager Shelley he showed me a copy of a pamphlet issued by the United States Department of Commerce Weather Bureau, San Francisco titled “Local Climatological Summary with comparative data 1950, Las Vegas, Nevada*1 which contained the following: “Narrative Climatological Summary" Las Vegas is located near the center of a broad level valley almost surrounded by mountains. The valley is about 25 miles wide in an east-west direction and about 30 miles long in a northeast-southwest direction. The land is desert, vegetation Is sage and mesquite, except in the city, which has a plentiful supply of trees. The origin of the large underground water supply has been a matter of interest for years, and it is believed the water originates in the state of Washington or possibly in Canada. I have requested the Weather Bureau to furnish copies of the pamphlet and will forward to you on receipt. W. H. Jo
