Celebrate Life Through the Arts
SOROR GRACE RAWLINS INTERNATIONAL REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE NATIONAL PROGRAM COMMITTEE
The arts speak to who we are across boundaries of language, race, age, time and other differences. Therefore, the arts promote global awareness and the increasing importance of bridging diversity in civic life. An arts program can promote the appreciation of the beauty and structure of art and enhance the quality of life in our communities. The arts in one form or another, can be enjoyed by everyone.
Art is able to lift persons out of unhappy circumstances. Art is able to assist persons to look inward; to look outward and observe and record the world around them; to enjoy the simple pleasures of life.
Alpha Kappa Alpha women are exceptionally creative beings. We can list among our artists: musicians, dancers, actors, writers in every genre, and so on. Our chapters are therefore very well placed to take a leading role in fostering in our communities an appreciation for art in one or more of its forms.
Over the next four years, chapters are encouraged to continue their innovative art projects as part of their ongoing community service. Chapters should collaborate with existing art institutions and art events. At the national and regional levels we will continue to feature our many talented sorors at conferences and other events.
Our undergraduate chapters are urged to jaLa part of, and to participate fully in, our BRrity’s programs. Seek partnerships with your graduate chapters and other organizations in your communities to carry forward Alpha Kappa Alpha’s programs. We have a
clear sense of who we are, so let’s show others what it means to be an Alpha Kappa Alpha woman through the commitments and contributions we make in our communities. The Program Committee is available as a resource to assist you.
The arts is one area in which our undergraduate sorors can provide a model and set a high standard for the rest of us to emulate. Activities can be fun, low cost and reach wide audiences. Some suggested activities are: organize a street art session for young children; hold poetry and play readings;
