At Las Vegas Welfare Office
under the left eye with a telephone, Patrolman Charles Park was slugged in the ribs. Neither was seriously injured.
Desks were overturned and welfare of fice personnel were jostled about.
The local welfare office was closed for the day and it was unknown when it would reopen. Police chief Pete Witcher said when the office did reopen, police protection would be provided.

The incident grew out of a follow-up demonstration to a Wednesday sit-in that ended in the arrest of five adults and
three children on trespass charges.
The sit-ins revolve around Mrs. Betty Wright, mother of three children whose
welfare checks was reduced from $144 to $66 this month. She was evicted from her home when she failed to pay the $115 March rent.
Mrs. Wright and four other persons were jailed Wednesday and then re leased the same night during a demon stration at the police station. About 40' candle-carrying protesters showed up at the station.
Mrs. Wright returned with yesterday’s group shortly after noon. The frafas
broke out shortly: after 2 p.m. r Charges against the 11 carried bonds of from $300 to $500. Attorneys negotiated to have the bonds reduced and a police spokesman said all 11 were expected to
be released last night.
Arrested were:
Florence Sanders and Mary Wesley,
charged with assault and battery. Clarence Smith and Elsie Henderson, charged with assault and battery and
disturbing normal acts in public place. Bernard Thomas, charged with dis
orderly conduct and disturbing.
Marilyn Donalt, Shirley Cooper, Doro
thy Baker, Irma O’Neal, Alversa Beals and Ossie Green, all on the disturbing charge.
