Harry Floyd Alter was born in Leryo, Illinois on September 30, 1887 to Evalyn McFarland and William Peterson Alter. He married Mary Alice Lake on February 1, 1909, and they had eight children. Alter died on July 5, 1984 in Los Angeles, California.

In 2014, as part of a legacy finding aid project, Hana Gutierrez created a collection description in compliance with current professional standards and entered the data into ArchivesSpace. In 2020, as part of an archival backlog elimination project, Ryan DiPaolo enhanced the descriptions to bring them into compliance with current professional standards.
