Haynes, Joe, 1916-2004

Joe Haynes was a city recreation administrator in Las Vegas, Nevada. He served as director of the Doolittle Community Center from its opening in 1964 until his retirement in July 1973. During his tenure, he founded the Men’s Progressive Basketball League in 1964 and coached one of its teams to a championship. He was also a retired city director of the Las Vegas Recreation Center.

Educator and community leader born in New York City. Began her career as a social worker before moving into education. She taught fifth and sixth grade at Matt Kelly School, where she also organized the library in 1961. Later served as a counselor at Las Vegas High School and earned a Master of Education from UNLV. Active in civic life as Financial Secretary for Pi Tau Sigma and Vice President of The Links Inc., Las Vegas Chapter. Employed at the historic Westside School in 1962. Married to George Cook.
