Davis, Glenn A. (Glenn Augustus), 1894-1980

American photographer Glenn Augustus Davis was born March 22, 1894 in Portland, Oregon. He attended school in Oregon and Washington prior to working in the lumber camps and saw mills of Washington and British Columbia. He served in the US Army from 1915 to 1920. He was a member of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) on the Western Front in France during World War I. In the years following the war, Davis returned to the US and worked as a cook, a cotton grower, and a seaman before following his passion for photography.

Pulido, Meli Calvo, 1966-

Meli Calvo Pulido was born in Mexico City and immigrated to the United States with her parents and eight siblings. In 1975, at 11:00 p.m. she woke up to the Silver Slipper on the Las Vegas Strip. She was raised on Las Vegas’s 28th Street, where she helped her family and their neighbors by becoming the neighborhoods unofficial translator. The need to serve her community and the hardships faced by her family and the families around her translated into her work after she graduated from what is now Southeast Career Technical Academy.

Hantewn, Dallamy Santos

Dallamy has beautiful memories of her childhood in Cuba where she played on the beach and in the fruit orchards. Her parents were separated, so she grew up with her mother and her siblings. Her father was a school teacher who was going to school for his doctorate. He urged Dallamy to pursue higher education, so she began a teaching program and was well on her way to receive a federal scholarship. In her last year of school Dallamy decided instead to move to the United States with her then partner.

Tafoya, Daniel J.

Daniel J. Tafoya is an undaunted soul. He attributes much of his success to the inspiration of his loving parents, Rose and Alphonso, from whom he learned to overcome the obstacles of poverty, dyslexia, and ADHD. He shares their stories of hardships and their personal belief that each of their four children could become successful.

Benavidez, Kelly D.

For Kelly Benavidez (b. 1976), life began in the northern California community of Daly City in a Spanish-speaking household. Her parents, Amelia and Genaro Benavidez, were among the few Latinos in their area at the time. Her parents felt strongly about immersing Kelly and her older brother in their Mexican culture. They made the important decision to return to Jalisco, Mexico with their young children.

Judge Abbi Silver was raised in Boulder City, Nevada. She graduated from Clark High School in Las Vegas, Nevada and then University of Nevada, Las Vegas (1986).

She worked multiple jobs—waitress, Utah Jazz cheerleader, dancer—while earning her undergraduate degree and then her law degree from Southwestern University of Law, in Los Angeles (1989).

Paher, Stanley W.

Stanley W. Paher is a Nevada historian, author, and publisher. He was born in 1940 in Las Vegas. He was raised in Las Vegas and attended Las Vegas High School in 1954. Throughout his young adulthood, he was interested in mining camps and ghost towns and would visit the ones in the surrounding area. After graduation from high school, he joined the Navy and spent two years in the reserves.
