Payne, Julia A., 1943-

Julia A. Payne was born in the 1940s in Santa Monica, California. Her parents had moved to southern California from Columbus, Ohio. After Julia graduated from high school in 1963, the family decided to move to Las Vegas where it was “less hectic.” Her father was one of the first African American athletic trainers for a professional football team. Her mother was swim team captain at Ohio State University and knew Dr. Ralph Bunche. For Julia, adjustment to Las Vegas was difficult. The city was not as diverse as Los Angeles.

Baller, Mike, 1939-

Michael Baller was born December 1, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan. In 1954 as a teenager, he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and grew up in the Crestwood area. He attended Las Vegas High School, where he met his wife, Susan Lockitch. The two were married in 1960 at Temple Beth Sholom, once he returned from his service in the United States Marine Corps.

Gregory, Mollie

Mollie Gregory is a filmmaker and writer from Los Angeles, California. After graduating from the Cinema School of New York University with Bachelor's and Master's degrees, she began her career as a documentary film writer and producer. Her earlier works focused on poverty and women's issues, including Songs from the Fourth World, Off the Edge, Welfare: Exploding the Myths, and Cities are for People.

Cohen, Gil

Gil Cohen was born August 26, 1947 in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1957, his family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. His father, Yale, had been recruited to work at the Stardust Hotel and Casino, which opened its doors in 1958. His mother, Toby, stayed at home to raise him and his sister, Debbie. After graduating from Las Vegas High School, Cohen turned down several golf scholarships to attend the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR).

Cancela, Yvanna, 1987-

Yvanna Cancela (born 1987) arrived in Las Vegas the summer of 2009. Fresh off a summer internship with Sen. Harry Reid in Washington, D.C., she was hired to work on Reid’s reelection

campaign. Yvanna’s political talents were blossoming as was her affection for southern Nevada.

Born in Phoenix, Arizona, and raised in Miami, Florida, Yvanna’s parents immigrated from Cuban. She received her Bachelor of Arts in communications in 2010 from Northwestern University.

Chabad of Southern Nevada

Chabad of Southern Nevada was established in 1990 by Rabbi Shea Harlig and his wife Dina Harlig. It is an outpost of the worldwide Chabad-Lubavitch organization that provides social services and educational programs for members of the Jewish community. Chabad of Southern Nevada is headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada and has six affiliated centers: Chabad of Summerlin, Chabad of Green Valley, Chabad of East-Or Bamidbar, Chabad of Southwest, Chabad Hebrew Center, and Chabad Student Services at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Jewish Repertory Theatre of Nevada

The Jewish Repertory Theatre of Nevada [JRTN] is one of the first professional theaters in the valley. Financed by two committed actresses’ personal investments, Norma Morrow and Charlene Sher, the theatre made great strides in the short amount of time since its 2010 inauguration.
