Bernice Eisenberg has been a Las Vegas resident since 1955 and was a part of the formation of Midbar Kodesh Temple. Eisenberg was a teacher and has taught at many Las Vegas schools. She met her husband, Ivan, at the Jewish Community Centers’ social club for young adults and married him in 1956. During the mid 1990s Las Vegas was a growing and Temple Beth Sholom was the only synagogue and Eisenberg worked to help form Midbar Kodesh Temple to serve the growing Henderson community. Bernice has two children.

Joseph Thiriot was born August 20, 1906 in Provo, Utah to George W. and Elvira Thiriot and was raised with four brothers. His father sold a “typing machine,” a forerunner to the typewriter. Eventually the family moved from Boise, Idaho to a ranch in Pahranagat Valley, Nevada, where the limits of educational opportunities compelled his parents to send him back to Provo to finish his education while living with family there. Gaining a teaching certificate enabled Thiriot to teach in rural Nevada.

Nila Ullom was the daughter of George and Norma Ullom. She was born and raised in Las Vegas, and lived the rest of her life there. She was a charter member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, golfer, the director of the Girl Scout Council, PTA President at Mayfair Elementary, Crestwood Elementary, and John C. Fremont Junior High. She was also a Sunday school teacher, and contribited to many social causes.

Edna “Ande” Rice was born October 01, 1943 in Oak Park, Illinois. She was raised Protestant to a mother who was a teacher and a father who was a mechanical engineer. Rice graduated from Illinois State University with her bachelor’s degree and attended Roosevelt University to obtain her master’s degree in education administration. Rice met her partner, Sharon Maurer-Schwartz, in the 1980s, but was not able to legally marry her until 2008 in California. They moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1999 and raised Maurer-Schwartz’s daughter Julie together.
