Abstract

Oral history interviews with Renee Diamond conducted by Caryll Batt Dziedziak on November 17, 1997, November 20, 1997, November 27, 1997, and November 30, 1997 for the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN) Las Vegas Women Oral History Project. Diamond begins her interviews describing her childhood and young adult life in Los Angeles, California. Diamond then discusses her interest in organizing, which started with the Rumford Fair Housing Act campaign. Diamond talks about continuing her activism with the Women's Democratic Club in Las Vegas, Nevada after she moved there in 1972. Diamond discusses Las Vegas in the 1970s, the activist community at the time, Ruby Duncan, and the importance of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Diamond goes on to describe the ERA extensively, including the benefits of passing the ERA, campaigns and challenges specific to Nevada, and locals involved in the efforts. Diamond also talks about working with the National Organization of Women (NOW), and her presidency in the Women's Democratic Club.

Abstract

Oral history interview with J. David Hoggard conducted by Claytee White and unnamed interviewer on various dates in 1997, 1998, and 1999 for the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN). Hoggard discusses serving in World War II, being transferred to Nellis Air Force Base in 1945, and moving to Las Vegas, Nevada from New Jersey in 1946. He also recalls becoming one of the first African American police officers in Las Vegas, and working in the Clark County School District for 15 years. Hoggard then discusses his involvement with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), including serving as chapter president for four years.

The Alice Key Photograph Collection (1930s-1990s) is comprised of color and black-and-white photographic prints of activist, dancer, and journalist Alice Key with family, friends, political figures, and performers. Materials include photographs of Senator Howard Cannon, Louis Armstrong, and Bill Robinson, and signed professional head shots. Also pictured are Key's coworkers and unidentified performers.

Abstract

The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada Photograph Collection contains mainly candid photographs of events and individuals affiliated with the Las Vegas-based Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada (GLCCSN) dating from 1993 to 2000. Photographs depict events honoring prominent members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer community; meetings at GLCCSN; and candidate nights for members of the community running for public office. The collection also includes a number of photographs of the Freedom to Marry celebration at the GLCCSN and the Gay Pride Las Vegas festival from 1998 to 1999.

Abstract

The Antonio Morelli Photograph Collection documents the professional and private life of the Sands Hotel Orchestra conductor, Antonio Morelli, from 1932 to approximately 1970. The majority of the photographs show events, Copa Room showgirls, and the orchestra at the Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada during the 1950s and 1960s. Subjects depicted in the photographs include a Copa girl with an atomic bomb crown, Joe W. Brown's Horseshoe million dollar display at Binion's Hotel and Casino, and Antonio Morelli performing with Jimmy Durante and Carl Cohen.

Abstract

The Bill Moore Professional Papers are comprised of documents, designs, and promotional materials of show producer Bill Moore from 1950 to 2010. From the 1960s until the late 2000s, Moore and his partner George Arnold produced a variety of stage shows, from musicals and revues to his famous "on ice" productions like Nudes on Ice and Playgirls on Ice. Materials include three-dimensional set designs, photographic prints, financial records, promotional posters, and audio and video recordings of shows at casinos in Las Vegas, Laughlin, and Reno, Nevada, and Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The Joe Andre Photograph Collection (approximately 1906-1980) contains photographic prints, postcards, and negatives documenting Joe Andre’s life. The images in this collection document his involvement in the United States Marine Corps Band and his days as a touring musician throughout the northwest and southwest United States. Also included are photographs of family vacations and businesses he owned in Beatty, Nevada.

The Southern Nevada Gem and Mineral Society Records (1950-2024) contain the records of the Clark County Gem Collectors, Las Vegas Gem Collectors, and the current Southern Nevada Gem and Mineral Society. The collection contains articles of incorporation, by-laws, membership directories, meeting minutes, correspondence, financial records, show paperwork, and award certificates. Also included are photographs of the organizations since the 1970s and digital scans of Gem Times and The Polished Slab newsletters.

Abstract

The Jany Ortiz-Robinson Papers (1984-2020) contain the papers of Ortiz-Robinson, who has worked in Nevada's early childhood education field for over twenty years. The collection mainly consists of awards and certificates awarded to Ortiz-Robinson over her career, from various organizations including the Economic Opportunity Board of Clark County, The Nevada Registry, Clark County School District, and the Nevada Association of the Education of Young Children. Also included is a copy of her dissertation from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), materials documenting graduation ceremonies, and yearbooks from her time at Moapa Valley High School and the University of San Francisco. A scrapbook documenting her senior year at Moapa Valley High School (1984-1985) contains photographs, ephemera, newspaper clippings, and handwritten notes about her final year in high school.
