Esau, Valda, 1937-

A native Australian, Valda Boyne Esau moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in the 1950s to become a professional dancer. She starred in the Lido de Paris show, which debuted at the Stardust Hotel and Casino in 1958 and was one of the most popular nightlife attractions in Las Vegas in the late 1950s and 1960s. Valda Boyne Esau danced in the first and third editions of the famed production as well as the first Cést Magnifique, a Las Vegas-inspired rendition of the Parisian show.

Orrock, Kevin T., 1951-

Kevin T. Orrock is president of Summerlin and vice president of Master Planned Communities for The Howard Hughes Corporation. He was born in Pioche, Nevada, and spent his early years in the San Francisco Bay area and in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Kevin graduated from a small liberal arts college with a degree in accounting, came to Las Vegas in 1974, and started working in the accounting department at the Desert Inn Hotel and Casino. He later earned his M.B.A. from University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Boag, Tina, 1940-

Tina Boag was born in New Your City, New York to Gabrielle Sirocky and Maghoub Hanafi. Her mother was born in Paris, France and worked as a dancer there. Her father was born in Port Said, Egypt and worked as a magician there. Tina moved to Las Vegas with her family as a teenager because of her father's magician career. She then left Las Vegas to continue her education. She returned to Las Vegas after a divorce and started working at Sands Hotel and Casino.

Description

On February 27, 1977, Roger Jablonski interviewed Betty Ham Dokter (born 1922 in Las Vegas, Nevada) about her life in Southern Nevada. Dokter first talks about her upbringing and education in Las Vegas before describing church activity and the first casino properties that were built. She later talks about presidential visits, economic changes in Nevada, the construction of Hoover Dam, and some of the social changes in Las Vegas. The latter part of the interview covers the topics of racial minorities, environmental changes, early grocery stores and movie theaters, and social clubs. The interview concludes with a brief discussion on Mt. Charleston.
