Abstract

Oral history interview with Valerie Wiener conducted by Barbara Tabach on January 20, 2015 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. In this interview, Wiener discusses her childhood and being raised in Las Vegas, Nevada in the 1950s as well as the academic path that led her career into politics. Throughout Wiener’s interview, she highlights the traditions of the small, but growing Las Vegas Jewish population in the 1960s. Wiener also discusses her community service work and her life mantra of giving.

Main Street shops in Ely, Nevada. Visible are the Bank Club, The Palace, Ely Theatre, State Cafe, Miner's Club, and The Capitol Casino. Ely is the largest city and county seat of White Pine County, Nevada. Ely was founded as a stagecoach station along the Pony Express and Central Overland Route, with the mining boom coming later than the other towns along US 50, with the discovery of copper in 1906. Though the railroads connecting the First Transcontinental Railroad to the mines in Austin and Eureka have long been removed, the railroad to Ely is preserved as a heritage railway by the Nevada Northern Railway and known as the Ghost Train of Old Ely. As of the 2010 census, the population was 4,255.

From the Nye County, Nevada Photograph Collection (PH-00221) -- Series V. Smoky Valley, Nevada and Round Mountain, Nevada -- Subseries V.A. Carver, Carver-Duhme, and Carver-Book Families (Smoky Valley). Doby Doc Caudill lived in Carlin, Nevada, and had amassed a large collection of memorabilia of early Nevada history. He later sold his collection to the Last Frontier Casino in Las Vegas. One of the items in Doby Doc’s collection was this old steampowered locomotive, which was hauled to Las Vegas by way of Highway 50 and the Round Mountain turnoff out of Austin, then on to Tonopah and Las Vegas. The side of the train says "PAT McCARRAN SPECIAL".
