Abstract

Oral history interviews with Evelyn Cappadonna conducted by David G. Schwartz on August 01 and 15, 2008 for the Remembering Jay Sarno Oral History Project. Cappadonna opens her interview by discussing her upbringing in Georgia. She recalls meeting Jay Sarno and his associates in the late 1950s at the Atlanta Cabana Hotel where she was working as a typist. Cappadonna then talks about moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1963 to continuing working for Sarno. She describes Sarno's personality, his personal life, and his family including details about his wife and children. She recalls his relationship with his mistress Carole Freeman, Sarno's generosity, and his lack of interest in his companies' finances. Lastly, Cappadonna details Sarno's death and funeral, his business associates, and her time working at Caesars Palace.

Abstract

Oral history interview with William H. "Bob" Bailey conducted by A. D. Hopkins on February 17, 1999 for the Las Vegas Review-Journal First 100 Oral History Project. In the interview, Bailey discusses his birth in Detroit, Michigan and his early life and education in Cleveland, Ohio. Bailey moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1955. He describes racial segregation in the neighborhoods he lived in, and in Las Vegas in general. He also talks about entertainers and business associates he worked with at the Moulin Rouge in Las Vegas. Other subjects Bailey discusses include the Great Society programs during the 1960s, affirmative action during the 1970s, the Las Vegas Black Chamber of Commerce, and minority business growth and development in Las Vegas.

The Siegfried and Roy Memorabilia Collection (1990-2000) consists of books, magazines, programs, and visual recordings from the shows of Las Vegas, Nevada entertainers Siegfried and Roy. Several of the books and magazines in the collection have been autographed by Siegfried and Roy.

Gregory Goussak was born January 17, 1961 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He graduated from Chaparral High School in 1979, completed his bachelor’s and master’s degree at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and his doctorate through the University of Phoenix.

Greg's childhood was shaped by experiences with Las Vegas' sixth grade centers, challenges with scoliosis, and especially, involvement with B'nai B'rith Youth Organization (BBYO).

Abstract

Oral history interview with Ada Glover conducted by Claytee D. White on March 23, 2022 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: A Collaborative Oral History Project. In this interview, Glover recalls living in the Berkley Square neighborhood in Las Vegas, Nevada. She shares her parents' history, starting with her father working at the Nevada Test Site and later for the Las Vegas Sun newspaper; her mother, a Culinary Union member and hospitality worker. Glover graduated from Rancho High School in 1962, and has vivid memories of the Westside community that includes Shaw's Apartment located on Van Buren and F Street, the Cotton Club owned by Jodie Cannon, The El Morocco Nightclub owned by James Calvin, and Bruno's Liquor owned by Mr. and Mrs. Bruno. Oral history interview with Stuart Mason conducted by Claytee White on November 09, 2006 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Mason discusses his company, Taylor Construction, and gives an overview of the hotels the company has built and background information about them. He then describes moving to Las Vegas, Nevada to build Caesars Palace in 1964 and how the Civil Rights Movement impacted the construction scene. He then talks about old and new building projects, and the differences between being his own boss and working for someone else.

Description

On February 15, 1979, Andrew Levy interviewed Isabella Jessie Curtis (born 1922 in Monroe, Wisconsin) about her experiences in Southern Nevada. Curtis first talks about her career in waitressing at several restaurants and casinos in Las Vegas before describing some of the early businesses in the Downtown Las Vegas area. The interview then moves to discussions on Curtis’s involvement in politics, her early recreational activities, and the atomic testing. The two later discuss the first telephones in Las Vegas, the Helldorado celebration, and her work at the Tropicana Las Vegas. The interview concludes with Curtis’s description on living in Sandy Valley, Nevada, and some of her first memories of the Union Pacific train depot in Las Vegas.
