Abstract

Oral history interview with Rachel Gibson conducted by Kay Long and Caryll Batt Dziedziak on August 25, 1998, September 01, 1998, September 14, 1998, and April 07, 1999 for the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN) Las Vegas Women Oral History Project. Gibson opens her interview discussing her family's migration history, living in Yerington, Nevada, and her immediate family. Gibson then describes her life in Tonopah, Nevada. She talks about education in the area, the social clubs, and recreation activities available. Gibson then discusses her elementary school teaching career and ends her interviews describing her family life and life in Las Vegas, Nevada in the 1940s and 1950s.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Maila Aganon conducted by Kristel Peralta, Cecilia Winchell, and Stefani Evans on June 10, 2021 for Reflections: The Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project.

Maila Aganon discusses her childhood, family upbringing, and immigration to the United States from the Philippines when she was a college student. She shares how her parents moved to Las Vegas first and Maila followed a decade later, investing in real estate and eventually taking up permanent residence. Maila talks about her employment history with Allstate Insurance, Bank of America, AAA, Caesars Entertainment, and finally Aon as a Senior Vice President. She also shares her thoughts on the growth of Las Vegas and the growth of the Asian community and cultural influence within the city.

Subjects discussed include: anti-Asian violence; Filipino grocery stores; Filipino foods; remote work.

Abstract

The Consolidated Students of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Records are primarily comprised of meeting minutes, agendas, publications, funding and planning documents, and memoranda created by the Consolidated Students of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (CSUN) from 1965 to 2019. CSUN is the undergraduate student government of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The records include information about how CSUN operates on a daily basis as well as the type of activities CSUN sponsors.

Description
Larry Henley was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1957. The family spent one year in Wisconsin, and then moved to Las Vegas in 1973 when he was 15. His schooling was mostly in Oregon, though he graduated from Chaparral High School in Las Vegas in Larry enrolled at UNLV in 1975 and was a student there off and on until 1980, the year he earned his theater degree. It wasn't until around 2002 that he got his master's. Mr. Henley started working at the concert hall at UNLV around 1977, doing lighting design work, then moved to Colorado Springs for three years. He opened the Pike s Peak Center, acting as stage manager and lighting technician, and eventually joined the stagehands' union. While in Colorado Springs, he was married, and he and his wife had a son. The Henleys moved back to Las Vegas so they could be closer to family, and Larry began working part-time on the stage crew at UNLV. He was listed as a classified employee, and this segued into a professional staff position in 1988. Today, Larry is the director of artistic programming and production at the Performing Arts Center. He schedules all performances in the theaters. He also does contracting and billing, works on the Master Series, and recruits speakers for the Barrick Lecture Series. He has made a 20 year career out of bringing entertainment and culture to the Las Vegas scene, continuing a tradition started by other directors.
