Description

Bill Sheehan describes his Philadelphia, PA, upbringing: Catholic schooling, importance of education and growing up with numbers (his father was a bookie). Knowing he might be drafted, he joined the Marine Corps in the 1940s and then returned home to finish he studies to become an accountant. In 1959 he became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). A short term job in California gave him a taste of the west. It was 1962, Las Vegas was growing and experiencing a shortage of qualified accountants. Bill applied for a CPA position and immediately was hired. Thus, began his permanent residency in Las Vegas. Bill talks about his professional life and how he eventually started his own firm in 1971. He retired in 1997. He also shares personal anecdotes, impressions and observations specifically about the growth of Henderson, Nevada, as it grew from a very small town adjacent to Las Vegas into a small city of over 200,000 people. Bill is a co-trustee, with Bob Clark, of the Boyer Charitable Foundation. This interview and many more are possible through the generous donation of the Boyers.

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Glynda White conducted by Claytee D. White on March 12, 2013 and August 23, 2014 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. Glynda White begins by discussing her upbringing in Jackson, Tennessee, where her father was a member of the local National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and was involved in the litigation to desegregate schools in the city. She explains how her father's activism inspired her to pursue a legal career and go to law school after graduating from Lambuth University. White discusses arriving in Las Vegas, Nevada in the 1970s to work as a teacher, later being on the board of the Las Vegas NAACP and working for the Nevada Black Chamber of Commerce. She describes her role at the College of Southern Nevada as a lead faculty member for the Department of Business Administration and Legal Studies, her teaching, and the work she has done to establish African American businesses in the Westside area of Las Vegas, as well as in North Las Vegas, Nevada.

On February 21, 1980, Andrew Bannister interviewed Vincent “Vince” Hart (born on July 7, 1945 in Jerusalem, Palestine) in Hart’s office about his experience with youth soccer, both as a coach and as a player. Hart discusses his family background and his residential history in the United Kingdom and the United States before explaining the development of the men’s soccer team at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He describes his impact on the program and his hopes for future student athletes. The two then delve into a discussion of the fundamentals of soccer and different strategies that are commonly used. They then conclude with a brief description of Vince’s experiences with meeting a variety of professional soccer players at the Las Vegas Stadium.
