Notes from the donor, Dennis McBride: The address given for the Kit Kat Club is approximate as it stood on the outskirts of Las Vegas at what then was known as "Five Points": the intersection of East Charleston Boulevard, East Fremont Street, and the Boulder Highway [at this location today noted as the extension of East Fremont Street]. ... The Kit Kat Club was a mixed bar which welcomed both African American and white patrons. ... This photograph belongs to the Clark County Museum. ... A crowd of local unions, including members of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 1780, Teamsters of America Local 995, and International Union of Operating Engineers Local 501 AFL-CIO march on the Las Vegas Strip in support of the Culinary Workers Union Frontier strike. Protestors hold signs that say "ON STRIKE NO CONTRACT FRONTIER", "FRONTIER UNFAIR", "Solidarity in Las Vegas is no mirage. Proud to be union!", "Maggie, I'd rather be a dumb bunny than a horse's ass!", among others. Culinary Union secretary-treasurer Jim Arnold and others make speeches from a platform decorated with posters. Multiple casinos can be seen in the background. Arrangement note: Series I. Description
On a wooden stage decorated with a metal structure that provides steps for the performers to stand on, entertainers perform the finale "New York-A Salute to Duke Ellington" of the show Pzazz! 70 staged by Donn Arden at the Desert Inn Hotel, Las Vegas. Standing in the center front of the stage is a male performer dressed in a prison inspired black and white striped costume that shows off his midriff and has white straps for arm sleeves. Surrounding the man are other various male and females also striking poses for the crowd. The other males are dressed in prison inspired orange and black striped costumes, while the females are either sporting one-shouldered, sparkling orange dresses with matching orange feather headpieces, or a two-piece costume made out of mesh covered in sparkling orange beading and with matching orange feather headpieces.
