Description
Daytime and nighttime views of the Klondike Hotel and Casino signs on the Strip. Information about the sign is available in the Southern Nevada Neon Survey Data Sheet.

Sign details: The Klondike Motel Casino is located on the east side of the strip, just north of the Las Vegas Tourist Bureau, actually sharing the same lot. The two are only separated by a small driveway. The mining town theme is exemplified throughout the exterior of the property with a western style text, seen on other similar themed properties such as the Frontier. Murals depicting scenes of prospecting miners and saloons adorn the surface as well as red steel sides which appears as wood, because of its horizontal panels. The property stretches north/south with a small parking lot separating the street from the establishment. Behind the front building a series of structures house the rooms. The buildings signage is situated along the face of the building, on the elevated surface of the walls themselves.

Sign form: Fascia
Sign-specific description: The top edge of the wall entire face of the building arches, and steps up in various places, and is lined with gold raceways lined with incandescent bulbs. On the north side of the main building upon a vast paneled steel surface the word "Casino" is spelled in giant gold channel letters painted white on the interior. They are bordered in red neon and filled with incandescent bulbs. The text for the establishment is the western type face seen in properties such as the Frontier, or the Westward Ho. To the right of the text, an internally lit, white faced, plastic message board message board, is housed in a gold painted steel cabinet. Moving around the corner to the west face of the property, we see "Casino" spelled in the same manner of Cannel letters, flanked on either side by gold painted housings for cabinets, both crowning with an arched top. Incandescent bulbs forma border around the housing. Set inside each one of the square recessed areas is an internally lit, white, plastic faced message center, with vinyl lettering. Both cabinets are painted red. Below the main text an internally lit, white plastic faced, message center, with rounded ended runs the length of the space underneath the letters. The main entrance is underneath an awning, facing southwest. In the center of the top edge of the vertical wall above the awning, a circular internally lit cabinet is bordered with a gold raceway lined with incandescent bulbs. The surface of the sign is yellow plastic with the cartoon image of a dancing miner, complete with pick-axe. Below that Klondike is spelled with metallic channel letters with yellow plastic faces. The text descends in size toward the center of the text, then swells back to the original size on the sides. Below this, "Casino" is spelled in all capital, channel letters, filled with incandescent bulbs and bordered in neon. They are treated gold on the exterior and white in the interior. The awning cover the entrance, and is treated with neon as well. The face of the square awning is designed with three square recessed panels, with open bottoms. Three tubes of neon line each one of the three closed edges. Each tube takes a turn illuminating, red yellow, and blue. Cantilevered off of the left-hand side of the entrance roof line, a horizontal black cabinet reads "Vacancy" painted in white, and overlaid with red neon. The all caps text faces north/south. Continuing south along the face of the building, a two leveled stretch of structure, continues the last portion of the main building. On the red steel fascia continuing, above the overhang of the second level, "Klondike Hotel" is spelled in large channel letters, treated the same as those seen on the north face of the structure. They are painted gold on the exterior and white on the interiors, filled with incandescent bulbs and bordered with neon. To the left of the text, one on the golden housings for the cabinet, seen on the northern end of the west face, is present but empty. The edge of the overhang, beneath the text is also lined with a raceway and incandescent bulbs

Notes: The text which spells casino flashes on and steady burns, then oscillates, steady burns again, then shuts off. Moving around the corner to the western face, all the raceways bordering all the elements chase each other, while the incandescent bulbs located within the text which spells, "Casino" oscillate rapidly. The awning adorned with neon also animates, changing color flashing from red, then blue, then gold. The text which reads "Casino" above the awning is filled with incandescent bulbs which oscillate as well. The incandescent bulbs in the main text on the southern half of the western face of the building light up one letter at a time then once they are all illuminated, then they all begin to oscillate. Once they oscillate for a few seconds, then they all light up once again. The sequence is ended once all the letters go dark.
Sign environment: Located just north of the tourist bureau, the Klondike has the honor of being the first casino a traveler encounters as they enter the Strip. Besides the company of the tourist bureau and the Welcome to Las Vegas sign, it stands rather solitary. It's collection of pulsating bulbs and neon make the Klondike the most dominant force in its presence.

Description
The sign for the permanently closed Davy's Locker dive bar sits at 1149 East Desert Inn Road. Information about the sign is available in the Southern Nevada Neon Survey Data Sheet.

Sign owner: Was Cindy Slight since 2010. Albert Hamika bought the property in 2016. Derek Stonebarger went to the property after they took the sign down and the fish portion of the sign is currently in his possession.
Sign details: The property was originally opened in 1968 by Davey Pearl, who was most known for being a boxing referee and later inducted to the World Boxing Hall of Fame. The actual opening date of the bar is unknown, but property records have shown that its building was constructed in 1968. The bar was known for the welcoming environment inside and inexpensive drinks. The sign itself drew people in because of its unique design. Right before their closure they started to have a variety of events taking place there such as: open mic night, trivia, and genre specific music nights. The current owners have demolished the iconic and beloved sign for the bar. The only portions that remain are white sign that reads "Cocktails" in red and the waves that the fish once "swam" above. The current owner of the property has told the Las Vegas Weekly, "I want to emphasize I wasn't like, 'Ok let's destroy this sign.' I like the sign, and I like the historic memorabilia"I tried. The only thing I can I can say is, it was time for it to come down." After hearing about this news Derek Stonebarger, who owns ReBar on Main Street, was distraught when he heard the news of the sign being taken down so he went to the property to find its remains. He hopes to restore as much of the sign as he can and possibly display it in a Nevada-themed restaurant he plans to open up.

Sign form: Roadside pole sign
Sign-specific description: This sign was designed to look like a fish was swimming in the ocean. The top of the sign give the appearance of waves. A neon tube was attached to the implied waves. Underneath this was a large, white fish whose tail and nose extended beyond the confines of the square shape of the sign. The fish appeared to have a large smile and two smaller fish "swimming" beside it. One of these smaller fish was near the larger fish's mouth and the "L." The other fish was located right under the "ker" in "Locker." Both of these fish were a light blue color, the same blue that matched the wave on top of the sign and surrounded the larger fish. In the middle of the large fish that makes up much of the sign were the words "Davy's Locker" in bright red and an elaborate cursive style font. Neon tubes outlined these letters, as well as all three fish included in the sign. Underneath all of this is a neon tube in the shape of a wave that is difficult to see in photos of the sign during the day, but glowed brightly at night. Below this signage was a back lit plastic sign reading "Cocktails" in a red script and "Gaming Spirits Pool" under that in a sans-serif, bold, dark blue font. Extending from the top of the sign at the end near the street was a pole with two, small square signs attached to that. The top one was yellow and read "OPEN 24 HRS." The one below that was white and read "COLD BEER." There are other photos of this sign where the plastic portion of the sign reads "COCKTAILS" in red still, but "Slots Video Poker" in blue and "Package Liquor" under that in red.

Sign environment: The surrounding environment of Davy's Locker was in a district that was close to UNLV as well as another popular bar that still caters to locals, Champagnes Cafe. It was located in a bustling area along to Maryland Parkway that locals travel on a daily basis. Davy's Locker was a popular watering hole for many people in the neighborhood due to its convenient location.

Sign - date of redesign/move: It was first restored in 2011 and another time in 2014. Sign was taken down from the property in 2017.
Sign - thematic influences: The theme of the sign appears to take inspiration from the phrase "Davy Jones' Locker." This is a common phrase that refers to "the bottom of the sea" or even "the mythical resting place of drowned mariners." Davy Jones is also believed to be an evil spirit from the bottom of the sea; therefore, the sign shows the influence of these aquatic origins that possibly inspired the name of the property.
Sign - artistic significance: The theme of the sign is aquatic, which also ties into the name of the property. The name of the property appears to take influence from the myth of Davy Jones, the evil spirit of the sea.

Oral history interview with Sergio "Checko" Salgado conducted by Laurents Bañuelos-Benitez, Barbara Tabach, Elsa Lopez, and Monserrath Hernández on June 4, 2019 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Checko talks about his personal history that led him to pursue journalism and photography. He discusses his education and employment working in art galleries in Denver, Colorado and Las Vegas, Nevada and the various art exhibitions he has designed including in the Marjorie Barrick Museum at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and in the Reynolds Senate Building in Washington, D.C.

Interviewed by Claytee White. Mario and his six siblings were reared by a single mother who taught him all of the family recipes. Moving to Las Vegas at four years of age Mario remembers moving into a black neighborhood where the family was not welcomed. All windows in their home were broken into the first night. The family moved the next day. Though the new house was still in an African American neighborhood, they were protected by Vera, their black babysitter. Mario developed the intense work ethic of his mother, and after working in several strip casinos, found his home at the Horseshoe, today's Binion's. He has been there for 33 years; first as a busboy and then becoming a waiter. He is a Culinary Union trained shop student who picketed his beloved work place for ten months during a 1980's labor dispute. His work in life and union benefits have made his a very good life.

Harriett Thornton Hicks was born June 8, 1913,in Parowan, Utah; the thirteenth child of 14. She tells of her pioneer family who dwelled in two log cabins—one for cooking and one for sleeping. In 1931, she moved to Las Vegas to join two older sisters who had relocated here. She was picked up at the train by young Charles Hicks, who was a friend of her sisters. Charles had a car and offered to provide transportation. Within three years, the two were married. She quit her drug store job to raise a family and he worked for the railroad, the only business at the time in Las Vegas. At the age of 96, Harriett recalls a range of community milestones, such as the Boulder Dam, the news of Pearl Harbor bombing, Fremont Street, the Biltmore Hotel, and how to live in a city with mob influences.

Jane Radoff?s sophisticated eye and creative energy follow her wherever she goes. Her interior designs have anonymously touched most all who have walked through many of the Strip casinos and hotels. Her working partnership with interior designer Roger Thomas for Steve Wynn properties are among the most iconic of recent era. Born 1940 in Pittsburgh, PA, to Adelaide and Meyer Sachs, Jane was destined to lead a colorful life. Her mother was a local radio/TV personality with her own show and her father was successful real estate entrepreneur. Jane attended the University of Michigan where she honed her design skills. Before moving to Nevada, Jane?s career path included Restaurant Associates, a short stint as a girl Friday for Johnny Carson, and freelance product design while starting a family. Then in 1978, her husband William ?Bill? Radoff accepted a purchasing director position from Billy Weinberger and Neil Smythe at Caesars. With her signature wry humor, she reflects on her early observations of Las Vegas, and eventually working with Roger Thomas. In time, the duo worked together to bring groundbreaking interiors to the Strip, primarily with Steve Wynn. As most Jewish transplants, the Radoffs first belonged to Temple Beth Sholom. Later she was the interior inspiration for Congregation Ner Tamid where Jon Sparer did the architectural design. She is a quiet icon of Las Vegas?s turn to elegance and warmth in design of public spaces.
