Abstract

The Marzette Lewis Papers (1970-2011) reflect Lewis' extensive history of activism in the Las Vegas, Nevada community regarding the education standards of the Clark County School District (CCSD), and her work to fight discrimination within the district. The bulk of material dates from 1988 to 2009. It contains correspondence, Clark County School District (CCSD) zoning information, CCSD agendas, information on Lewis' two organizations, Westside Action Alliance Korps (W.A.A.K- U.P.) and Concerned Citizens, and video and audio recordings.

Oral history interview with Alice Waite conducted by Carole Terry and Donna Andress on October 19, 2011 on behalf of the Junior League of Las Vegas. Waite opens her interview by discussing her family's move to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1940 so her father could work as a school teacher. She talks about her childhood education and her father's civic engagement. Waite then discusses her husband, children, and working on her education while raising a family. She then describes her time as a teacher, and the events she helped produce for the Junior League, including a puppetry convention. Waite ends the interview discussing her childhood in Las Vegas and what the city was like in the 1940s.

Oral history interview with Rona and David Mendelson conducted by Barbara Tabach on April 26, 2016 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. In this interview, Rona and David Mendelson describe moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1973 as a married couple and how they became board members of Congregation Ner Tamid, which led them to getting involved with the small and growing Jewish community. They discuss their activities and their current family ties within the Jewish community in Las Vegas. As educators, they also delve into their experiences with the school system in Southern Nevada and the discrimination they faced as Jewish educators and parents.

Chung reflects on the importance of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) in education with an emphasis on the arts and shares his teaching philosophy. Oral history interview with Florence and Jerry Vallen conducted by Kenneth "K. J." Evans in 1999 for the Las Vegas Review-Journal First 100 Oral History Project. In the interview, Jerome "Jerry" Vallen discusses his early life in Philadelphia, focusing on his family history and marrying Florence. Jerry then talks about his children, his education in hotel management, and his arrival to Las Vegas, Nevada with Florence in 1967. Jerry and Florence recall the establishment of the College of Hotel Administration, later known as the William F. Harrah College of Hospitality, at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Other subjects they cover include the Clark County school system and the programs available for the students' professional development.
