Abstract

Records are comprised of memoranda, committee minutes, and planning documents from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Women's Studies Department from 1966 to 1993. The records document the inception of both the Women's Center and Women's Studies program at UNLV. The materials from the Women's Center document the efforts of UNLV staff to begin a women's center on campus and efforts to create a Women's Studies program.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Robert Bolden conducted by Nick Matthews on November 29, 2014 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. In this interview, Bolden discusses growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada. He talks about his educational experience in Las Vegas, taking the bus to school while living in West Las Vegas, being involved in school sports, and describes the first schools to open on the Westside. Bolden then recalls racial disparities in Las Vegas, African American leaders in his community, and the importance that his education had to him. Lastly, Bolden discusses his career coaching for his track club, Las Vegas Blazin One’z.

Description

On March 18, 1978, Susan Scott interviewed Thalia Dondero (born 1921 in Greeley, Colorado) about her experiences in Nevada and more specifically about her work as a Clark County Commissioner. Dondero first speaks about her background and the circumstances which led her to move to Las Vegas. She also talks about her children, her work with the Parent-Teacher Association, and her service with the Nevada State Park Commission. She also mentions some of her lobbying work for the development of state parks, including a project by National Geographic in which she visited multiple parks, and she later describes the development of the Las Vegas Strip. At the end of the interview, Dondero talks about her involvement in various organizations, her consideration for running for governor, and some of the topics she handles as a commissioner for the county.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Thomas Rodriguez conducted by Maribel Estrada Calderón on September 10, 2018 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Rodriguez discusses how his grandparents migrated from Mexico to Topeka, Kansas. Rodriguez later discusses moving to Las Vegas, Nevada to work for the Las Vegas Clark County Consortium. He mentions the Latino Youth Leadership Program and his college experience. He goes on to discuss his involvement in the Chicano Movement and Hispanics in Politics and describes the lawsuit he filed against the Clark County School District for employment discrimination. Rodriguez then talks about the Rafael Rivera Community Center and describes the growth of Las Vegas.
