UNLV University Libraries Photographs of the Jewish Community of Southern Nevada

Abstract

The UNLV University Libraries Photographs of the Jewish Community of Southern Nevada (2015-2018) are comprised of digital images captured as part of the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. The photographs include members of the Southern Nevada Jewish community, synagogues Temple Beth Sholom (current and original site), Congregation Ner Tamid (including aerials), Chabad of Las Vegas, Temple Sinai, and Midbar Kodesh Temple. There are also photographs of The Desert Torah Academy's Robert Cohen Educational Campus, the future site of Chabad of Green Valley, the Holocaust Resource Center, Manpower Las Vegas’s 50th anniversary celebration, and the House of Straus.

Oral history interview with Elaine Newton conducted by Cecilia Winchell, Kristel Peralta, and Vanessa Concepcion on May 19, 2021 for Reflections: The Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project. Elaine Newton shares her family's history living in Hawaii and Japan, and memories from her childhood growing up with her six siblings in Honolulu. She talks about becoming a flight attendant for Pan American World Airways and how she met her former husband, Wayne Newton, after a stop in Vietnam. Elaine recalls their courtship and marriage as well as what Las Vegas life, fashion, and entertainment were like during the 1980s. She also speaks about racial discrimination and anti-asian violence in the past and present.

Oral history interview with Edythe Katz-Yarchever conducted by Claytee White on December 09, 2000, February 11, 2003, March 11, 2003, and December 06, 2005 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas History Project. In the interviews, Katz-Yarchever discusses her life in Las Vegas, Nevada, owning movie theaters with her husband, Lloyd Katz, and the strides they made in civil rights. She talks about her service in Civil Defense and the National Guard, moving to various places, and working in Los Angeles, California. She also discusses becoming involved in the community in various ways with Operation Independence and Holocaust education.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Norman Ty Hilbrecht conducted by Sherry Angell on July 2, 1975 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Hilbrecht discusses his life in Southern Nevada and changes that he has observed during his time living in the state. The two discuss how Hilbrecht originally came to Las Vegas, Nevada, schools that he attended, and educational changes in law practice. Hilbrecht also discusses his political activities and the sudden influx of newcomers to Nevada. The interview concludes with discussion of changes to Southern Nevada after World War II and natural disasters that Hilbrecht has experienced in Las Vegas.
