Abstract

Oral history interview with Horrace Smith conducted by Heather Mulgrew on April 01, 2003 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Smith reflects upon his experience as an administrator with Nevada’s Clark County School District (CCSD). He discusses his first experiences at Western High School, and how he was a teacher and coach before entering administration. He discusses his experiences with standardized testing, school integration and bilingual education, and how these experiences shaped his approach to school administration. He also discusses challenges that he faced with school overcrowding and safety, and describes his working relationship with teachers, administrators, and parents. He offers suggestions for individuals interested in pursuing school administration, and stresses the importance of the principal being present and active within the local community.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Jerome J. Vallen conducted by James Shaw on February 27, 1979 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Vallen discusses his career as the dean of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas' Hotel Administration College, a position he occupied at the time of this interview. Vallen discusses program funding, how UNLV's program compares with Cornell University's hotel administration program, and the difficulty the university faced establishing a program with newer educational concepts compared to some other majors which had been around for much longer, such as the math or sciences departments. Vallen then explains how they assisted students in finding jobs in the hotel industry, as well as his plans to grow the program and construct a dedicated building for the program on campus.

Oral history interview with Ralph Cadwallader conducted by Jane Kurakazu on October 15, 2001 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In the interview, Cadwallader discusses his family and upbringing in Massachusetts. He then discusses how he came to Las Vegas, Nevada in the late 1960s to teach at Garside Junior High School. He discusses his appointment as assistant principal at Western High School and Basic High School during the 1970s before being appointed as Associate Superintendent of the Clark County School District in 1978. He discusses his duties as Associate Superintendent and changes that he implemented at Valley High School, Clark High School, Bonanza High School, and Chaparral High School. He also discusses his philosophy as a school administrator, and how this philosophy influenced his interactions with educators and students. He briefly discusses his role as Associate Superintendent in Tempe, Arizona, but then discusses his 1999 return to Las Vegas as part of the Nevada Association of School Administrators.
