Abstract

Oral history interview with Jim Bradstreet conducted by Jean Lewis on March 8, 2003 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Bradstreet discusses his upbringing and first job teaching in New York in 1962, before becoming a principal at Southern Cayuga Central School in 1974 and retiring in 1987. He then discusses how he became superintendent of the Mineral County School District in Nevada, his personal philosophy to educational administration, and pressures that he faced as an administrator. He also discusses his job duties, and provides suggestions for individuals considering becoming principals and administrators.

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Michael Chin conducted by Jerwin Tiu, Cecilia Winchell, and Stefani Evans on December 20, 2022 for Reflections: the Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project. In this interview, Chin describes growing up in a largely Americanized household. His paternal grandparents immigrated from China and owned a laundry shop that his father worked in as well. Chin discusses his education and his interest in creative writing, including editing the school newspaper and writing an a cappella blog with his friend while in college. After graduating, he worked at the John Hopkins Center for Talented Youth as a resident assistant before getting into a graduate program and obtaining his MFA.

Abstract

The Mike O'Callaghan Professional Papers (1943, 1968-2004) mainly consist of research files gathered by Mike O'Callaghan in his post-political capacity as executive editor of the Las Vegas Sun as well as owner and publisher of the Henderson Home News, Boulder City News, and Green Valley News. The papers also contain handwritten and typewritten drafts of O'Callaghan's "Where I Stand" article for the Las Vegas Sun, along with his reporter's notebooks, monthly planners, and photographic prints. The research files cover a wide variety of topics, including but not limited to environmental issues; nuclear waste; state and local politics; military and veterans affairs; foreign relations including Israel, Iraq, and Korea; and education. The collection also contains copies of speeches given by O'Callaghan as the 23rd Governor of Nevada between 1971 and 1979, some of which contain handwritten notations.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Norman A. Craft conducted by Claytee D. White on August 06, 2015 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Craft discusses Henderson, Nevada in the 1940s, Victory Village, and Townsite housing and schooling. He then describes teaching at Rancho High School in Las Vegas, Nevada and recalls the application of the Title IX ruling on education. Lastly, Craft discusses race relations at Rancho High School, school riots, and the passing of the Civil Rights Act.

The Clark County High School girls' team is posing with their ball for a black and white photograph on the stairs of the school. Later the school was renamed Las Vegas High School. The girl holding the ball is identified as Louella Wengert (Ham). In the first row left to right are: Wanda Ball (Moser), Florence Bishop, Louella Wengert (Ham), Gladys Boggs (Marshall), Martha Kramer (her father was a barber). In the second row left to right are: Etta McDonald, Clara Kiernan, Teacher, Rose Coughlin (Ullom) -- her father was a railroad man and Olive Lake (Eglington).
