Description
Three decades prior to this interview, Chris Guinchigliani moved to Las Vegas and began teaching at the Clark County School District. Seeing Las Vegas as a place of personal opportunity, she involved herself first in the teachers union; eventually serving as president of the Nevada State Education Association from 1987 through 1991. She shares some of her political experiences being elected to the Nevada State Assembly for 16 years and then became a Clark County Commissioner. Chris and her husband Gary Gray (above left) are longtime residents of the John S. Park Neighborhood and Chris was among those who originated the idea to getting a historical designation for the community. She highlights the process and obstacles within the community as people developed an understanding about what preservation really meant. Abstract

Oral history interview with Steven D. McCoy conducted by Hope Vigil-Delgado on November 26, 2001 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, McCoy reflects upon his 33-year career as a teacher and administrator with Nevada’s Clark County School District. He describes the process by which he became a teacher, and discusses how his teaching experience shaped his approach to school administration. He discusses his experience at Roy Martin Middle School, and describes the student cultural diversity and bilingual education programs within the school. He also discusses various programs that he implemented at various schools, and describes his approach to teacher evaluations and dismissals.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Julie Rae Kasper conducted by John Barela on April 08, 2005 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Kasper reflects upon her career as a teacher and school administrator in Pennsylvania and Illinois during the 1980s and 1990s. She discusses how she started volunteering to teach special education when she was in eighth grade, and how this experience inspired her to become a teacher. She then describes the process by which she served as an elementary school principal in the Waukegan School District in Illinois and worked with early childhood special education programs. She discusses her approach to educational leadership, how her approach has changed over the years, and responsibilities that she faced as principal. She also compares working in the Waukegan School District with working in the Clark County School District (CCSD), and describes the different approaches of each school district.
