Description

Oral history interview with Sandra Candel conducted by Elsa Lopez, Monserrath Hernández, and Barbara Tabach on October 03, 2019 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Sandra Candel talks of her childhood growing up with her grandparents in Guadalajara, Jalisco after her mother immigrated to America. She moved to California to attend university before moving to Salt Lake City, Utah, where she raised her children and began homeschooling them. This path led to Sandra opening a Montessori school, igniting her interest in education. She talks of her pursuit of both a Masters Degree from Drexel University and a Doctoral Degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Sandra concludes her interview with discussion of her research and current employment as a part-time instructor for the Department of Interdisciplinary, Gender, and Ethnic Studies at UNLV. Subjects discussed include: Guadalajara; Salt Lake City, Utah; Sensitive Teaching Practices; Multi-generational families.

Oral history interview with Richard "Monte" Bay conducted by Peter Brown on November 14, 2006 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Bay reflects upon his career as a teacher and administrator with the Clark County School District (CCSD) from the 1980s to the time of the interview. Originally from Nevada, he describes his upbringing and pursuit of education, how he became a teacher, and eventually a principal. He discusses his regular job responsibilities and challenges that he faced with school overcrowding. He also describes his approach to leadership, and how his approach changed working at high schools such as Coronado High School.

Oral history interview with Walter V. Long conducted by Brenda Baechle on February 19, 1979 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In the interview, Long discusses his arrival to Las Vegas, Nevada from Tonopah, Nevada in 1930. Long also discusses his experiences as a teacher and principal in various Las Vegas schools. Other subjects Long discusses include his education, the Boulder (Hoover) Dam's construction, laws for obtaining a teaching certificate during the 1930s, his experiences with Las Vegas High School, and his early life in Tonopah.
