Abstract

Oral history interview with Helen M. Clark conducted by Danny Winegar on March 05, 1979 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview Helen Clark speaks about her family's move to Las Vegas, Nevada and working as a secretary. She then discusses the beginning of tract home building, gambling, and the building of the Hoover Dam. She also mentions life during the Great Depression, prostitution in Block 16, and the Helldorado celebration. Clark then talks about the first hotels and casinos that were built on the Las Vegas Strip and the mob's influence over those hotels.

Rob Mullaney interviews William “Bill” Brymer (born 1916 in Cambria, Illinois) about his experience living in Las Vegas, Nevada. Brymer explains how he moved to Las Vegas for the gaming attractions and eventually married and had two children. Brymer worked as a craps dealer at the Frontier Club in Downtown Las Vegas and also at the Last Frontier on the Las Vegas Strip. He later worked as a pit boss at the Sahara. Brymer also discusses a visit by Lyndon B. Johnson, the early atomic testing, the importance of religion in his life, changes in climate, the development of the Strip, the existence and decline of agriculture, and some of the entertainers who performed on the Strip.

Abstract

The Bill Friedman Professional Papers (1974-1982) contain the corrected manuscripts with publisher’s annotations of the first and second editions of Bill Friedman's book Casino Management. The second edition contains an updated chapter on the casino industry in Atlantic City, New Jersey. There are also photocopies of drafts of both editions. Bill Friedman taught a casino management course at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
