Bustamante Adams, Irene, 1968-

Irene Bustamante Adams believes in the reinvention of oneself as the path to the future. And since coming to Nevada in 1990 she has proven that anything is possible.

She was born and raised in rural California where she worked the fields alongside her family members growing up. Her mother is a native of New Mexico, with family that dates back six generations; her father was born in Mexico.

Mallin, Sandy

Sandy Mallin grew up in New York and graduated from New Rochelle High School. She moved to Las Vegas, Nevada from Westchester County, New York in 1977 with her first husband, who wanted to expand his wholesale seafood business. The couple had three children but were later divorced. Mallin was a leader in Las Vegas’ Jewish community and the first female President of Temple Beth Sholom.

McLean, Charlie

Charlie McLean was born in 1932 and raised in Scotland to a family of musicians. McLean’s dad started teaching him to play the saxophone when he was eight years old. By the time he was nine years old, he was performing in his father’s band, which included playing concerts for the munitions workers during World War II. When he was 15, McLean’s family migrated to the United States. Following graduating from high school, McLean was drafted and played with the Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO) Club Band.

Washington, Hermina, 1957-

Hermina Washington was born December 23, 1957 in Henderson, Nevada. To take advantage of emerging opportunities for African Americans, her parents migrated from Arkansas to Las Vegas, Nevada, joining several extended family members already settled in the city. Growing up during the Civil Rights Movement, Washington was surrounded by strong, inspiring role models, including her grandmother and educators.

Gore, Robert

Robert Gore first came to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1973 as a public affairs officer with the Air Force. He returned to West Virginia to go into the family business in 1976 and four years later was offered a job with Summa Corporation. Back in Las Vegas, he also served as director of the Air Force Association. At a dinner meeting of the Association, Retired General Bill Becker suggested that an engineering school was needed at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).

Wiener, Louis, Jr., 1915-1996

Louis Wiener, Jr. was born on March 28, 1915 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1931 and graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1932. He attended the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) and the University of California (UC) Berkeley School of Law. When Wiener was admitted to the Clark County Bar Association, there were only 16 other attorneys in Las Vegas.

Schofield, Jack Lund, 1923-2015

Nevada Assemblyman, Senator, and Regent, Dr. Jack Schofield was born in 1923 and passed away in 2015. In 1941 he graduated from Las Vegas High School, married Alene Earl, and became the Golden Gloves welterweight boxing champion. He earned a bachelor's of science degree from the University of Utah in 1949, a master's degree from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1967, and a doctorate in education from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1995.
