Abstract

Oral history interview with Richard Marc Denton conducted by Claytee D. White on December 12 and 16, 2024 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Denton recalls his childhood and growing up in Los Angeles, California. After high school, Denton joined the military and was sent to Vietnam, and served actively for a year but qualified for an early release. Returning to Southern California, he worked for the Department of Public Works and then for the United States Post Office until retirement. He moved to a quieter life in Las Vegas, Nevada where he describes his love of the desert, learning about the city's history, and is a member of the Old Spanish Trail Association.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Leroy Payne conducted by Claytee D. White on January 29, 2013 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Payne discusses working for Lockheed Overseas Corporation during World War II and his construction career in Las Vegas, Nevada. Payne describes traveling around England while employed by Lockheed Corporation and performing procurement duties for United States military bases. He also describes meeting and marrying his wife in Belfast, Ireland in 1943. Payne concludes by discussing their move to Las Vegas during the 1960s and his work in housing development constructing different neighborhoods and communities.

Oral history interview with Susanne E. Morrow conducted by Dennis McBride on September 29, 2000 for the Las Vegas Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Archives Oral History Project. Morrow begins by discussing her childhood in a military family, her marriage and children, and her move to Genoa, Nevada in 1961. She then talks about her move to Carson City, Nevada in 1962 and her twenty-nine year career as a journalist and city editor for the Nevada Appeal newspaper. The remainder of the interview focuses on Morrow's memories of the 1965 assault on then Chief Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court, Frank McManee, and the subsequent judicial actions and court decisions that reflected attitudes toward homosexuality prevalent in society at the time.

Oral history interview with Clifford R. Clayton conducted by Mechia Sydnor on November 11, 2014 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. Clayton begins the interview talking about his childhood in Virginia, and his subsequent move to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1960 in order to pursue a career in the military at Nellis Air Force Base. He then discusses working on the Strip in Las Vegas, as well as the influence of organized crime on casino operations. He then details the desegregation movement in Las Vegas throughout the 1960s and 1970s, as well as the notable leaders in the community. He also describes the night life in West Las Vegas, on the Strip, and on Fremont Street.

Oral history interview with Robert Foster conducted by Kelley Tuchman on March 02, 1978 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Foster first talks about his background in the military and his eventual teaching experience in special education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Foster then discusses helping the development of the special education field in Clark County and throughout the country, including the legislation and training toward the education program itself. Foster ends the interview by recalling his personal experiences and importance of helping the mentally and physically disabled.

Oral history interview with Patricia Morse Jarman conducted by Claytee D. White on May 01, 2018 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. In this interview, Jarman discusses her early life and joining the United States Air Force. She remembers moving to North Las Vegas, Nevada in 1974, being stationed at Nellis Air Force Base, and her decision to stay in Las Vegas after her military service. Jarman talks about her interest in sports analytics, becoming a boxing judge, and being appointed to the Nevada Consumer Affairs Commission. Lastly, Jarman discusses working with local government to prevent the development of apartment buildings on golf courses, and the 1 October shooting.

Oral history interview with Monica Gresser conducted by Stefani Evans and Claytee D. White on September 20, 2016 for the Building Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Gresser discusses her upbringing in El Campo, Texas and her initial interests in architecture. She recalls attending Texas Tech University and the University of Houston, designing sustainable buildings, and moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2001. Gresser talks about gentrification in the Las Vegas downtown area, low-income communities, and the environmental conditions in disadvantaged areas. Later, Gresser describes her focus on developing transitional housing for military veterans and unhoused individuals, hostile architecture, and the issue of poverty across the United States.
