Abstract

The Daughters of Union Veterans (DUV) of the Civil War, Las Vegas, Nevada Records comprise various materials from the organization ranging from the years 1861 to 1970, with a bulk of the material dating from 1948 to 1954. The contents consist of a scrapbook of memorabilia and newspaper clippings, magazine articles profiling the Grand Army of the Republic, reissues of Harper’s Weekly from 1861, and the correspondence and ephemera of Henrietta Denny.

The Nancy Austin Papers (1966-1978) consist of newspaper clippings and photographs documenting the career of Las Vegas, Nevada entertainer Nancy Austin. The photographs document Austin’s entertainment career as well as other business ventures, including her own clothing line for plus-size women, called Pudgy Playmates.

Abstract

The Ron Lurie Papers are primarily comprised of photographs, newspaper clippings, and daily planners from 1972 to 1990 that document Ron Lurie's political career as a city councilman and a mayor of Las Vegas, Nevada. The collection also includes a small amount of correspondence and ephemera, mainly letters that were mailed to Lurie along with photographs. The photographs in the collection depict events and activities that Lurie participated in, and the newspaper clippings document city and state politics in addition to Lurie's political career.

The Wengert Family Photographs (1890-1966) depict the lives of the Wengert family. In addition are materials focusing on day-to-day activities such as holiday celebrations, family milestones, and some Southern Nevada Power Company employees. Although there are chronological gaps in the materials, particularly in the early years of Cyril and Lottie’s lives, the images provide historical documentation of this Las Vegas family.

The Peter Collins Papers on International Gaming (1974-2010) consist of materials collected or written by Professor Peter Collins on legalized gambling. The collection includes research papers, industry and government reports, and media reports on the development, legality, economics, and ethics of legalized gambling. Most of the materials focus on gambling in the United Kingdom; the balance of the material covers South Africa, Canada, the United States, the European Union, Australia, some Asian-Pacific nations, and materials not specific to location.

José Luis Gutiérrez is a self-made entrepreneur and icon in Las Vegas, Nevada, who immigrated at a young age from his hometown in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. José’s childhood memories are filled with nostalgic and loving stories from being raised by his grandmother to working at his uncle’s mechanic shop from a young age. José remembers his childhood as a tough one since he had to start working early in life and did not get to finish high school even, but he relates how his mother always motivated him to do big things in life.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Rodel Fuentes conducted by Tracy Fuentes on December 4, 2021 for Reflections: The Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project.

Rodel Fuentes tells stories of his upbringing in Manila, Philippines, where he was raised in a shared family home amongst his parents, siblings, aunts, and uncles. He talks about his parents' immigration to the United States and how he later joined them in Los Angeles, California where he met and married his wife. Rodel Fuentes shares the couple's decision to move to Las Vegas, Nevada, his work at Dunn Edwards paint company, and how he became a licensed general contractor and real estate agent where he now owns his own company. Rodel Fuentes discusses his thoughts on Las Vegas' diversity, affordability, restaurants, and Asian community. He also talks about experiencing anti-Asian hate, worsened by misconceptions and discrimination that came from the COVID-19 pandemic.
