Description

Dennis McBride interviews Eddie Anderson (born 1946) about his role in advocating for LGBT rights, specifically his participation in the various political and social movements during previous decades. The interview begins with a discussion of Anderson’s background, including his experiences growing up in children’s homes and living with his grandparents. Anderson mentions marching with his grandparents for both workers’ and women’s rights as some of his first political involvements. Anderson also discusses his original aspirations for becoming a priest as well as his memories of meeting President John F. Kennedy during a visit to his high school when Anderson was student body president. Anderson then discusses travelling to the South, specifically in Selma, Alabama, during one summer while in high school in order to help register Black voters. Oral history interview with Patricia Becker conducted by Claytee D. White on April 15, 2014 for the West Charleston Neighborhoods: An Oral History Project of Ward 5. In this interview Patricia Becker discusses her extensive law career serving as deputy attorney general and as the first woman selected to serve on Nevada's Gaming Control Board. She then discusses moving on to become general counsel for Hararh's Entertainment International and to becoming the senior Vice President of corporate affairs and legal adviser for Aladdin Gaming. She finally discusses the opening of her law firm, Patricia Becker and Associates, and her work with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Oral history interview with Celese Rayford conducted by Phillip Walley on November 14, 2015 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. In this interview, Rayford discusses her career as an educator in Las Vegas, Nevada. She begins by describing her upbringing in Las Vegas, the Westside community of Las Vegas, and attending Spellman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Rayford then discusses her involvement with Top Teens of America and how that program helps to prepare young girls for college. She continues, talking about the effectiveness of disciplinary action against students, her experiences from her first year of teaching, and headstart programs for students who live in poverty.

Oral history interview with James Deacon conducted by Mary K. Keiser on August 24, 2006 for the UNLV @ 50 Oral History Project. In this interview James Deacon discusses interviewing with Dean Bill Carson in the summer of 1960 for a job at the University of Nevada, Southern Regional Division (currently University of Nevada, Las Vegas). He also talks about moving to Reno, Nevada with his family and teaching at the University of Nevada, Reno for two summers, then promptly returning to UNLV. Deacon then discusses how he was instrumental in organizing the Department of Environmental Studies and in helping to develop a masters and Ph.D. program in biology at UNLV.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Ken Hanlon conducted by Claytee D. White on November 29, 2006 for the UNLV @ 50 Oral History Project. Hanlon, a trombonist, discusses being on the road with Si Zentner's orchestra and playing in many of the Las Vegas Strip hotels. He also discusses getting hired as chair of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Music Department in 1970. Hanlon then discusses the Las Vegas, Nevada Chapter of the International Trombone Association and the Arnold Shaw Popular Music Research Center.
