Alvarez, Paco, 1974-

Las Vegas native Brian ‘Paco’ Álvarez is an anthropologist, entrepreneur and thought leader in the arts. He holds a master’s degree in Urban Leadership from the School of Public Policy and Leadership at the Greenspun College of Urban Affairs at UNLV and a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology. Paco is the founder of two-start-ups, Psionic Art Works and Fabulous Story Tours. His passion for art and culture has been the driving force behind his career, but most importantly realizes that his passion is what drives a dynamic economy.

Kitty Rodman was born on July 5, 1925 in Richmond, Virginia. Before she relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada and became known as the “First Lady of Construction,” she worked as a payroll supervisor for a government construction project in the early-to-mid 1940s where she gained experience in construction administration.

Description

Oral history interview with Francis Oh Allen-Palenske conducted by Stefani Evans on June 30, 2022 for Reflections: the Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project. In this interview, Francis describes her childhood growing up in Lousiana with a white father and Korean mother. She recalls the family relocating to Reno, Nevada in 1983 where Francis obtained her bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1999. She describes serving as a staffer in Washington, D.C. for Representative Jim Gibbons (R-NV) before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada. She discusses her Korean mother, maternal grandmother, and maternal aunts as strong, smart, business-minded women. Throughout the interview, she discusses Korean traditions, celebrations, clothing, and foods, as well as Korean cosmetics and views about skin color.

In this interview, Russ discusses her early life in New Zealand and growing up on a tobacco farm. She remembers arriving to the United States and establishing a career as an artist. Russ talks about the 1 October shooting, creating an art exhibit using cards and letters received from people all over the world, and Las Vegas’ response to the tragedy. Lastly, Russ describes the art community in Las Vegas and the Arts District.
