Lisby, Lee Henry

Lee Henry Lisby was born July 01, 1902 in Louisiana. In 1942, Lisby moved from Tallulah, Louisiana to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he found success in owning real estate. He retired as a sawmill worker, truck driver, construction laborer, and hotel porter. His first housing was an old Army hospital tent, and then he built a house. All of his ten children graduated from high school in Las Vegas.

Description

On February 27, 1979, Cindy Gaylor interviewed engineering aid accountant, Laura Kelly (born December 31st, 1928 in Silverton, Colorado) in her home in Boulder City, Nevada. The two discuss Kelly’s reasons for moving, as well as her early life in Boulder City. They also discuss Nellis Air Force Base, as well as local politics. The interview concludes with a discussion of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in Southern Nevada, during the Great Depression.

Additional description provided by UNLV Special Collection: "In 1926, Earle managed the Station and Camp on Main near Bonanza site of first school in Vegas, in 1905. A tent house - boarded up about halfway and desks built against the fall - pupils sat facing the wall. Miss Plum (sp?) from Reno was the teacher." Note: "Earle" previously referred to may be Earle Eglington.
