Howard Hughes on the flight deck of the HK-1, Flying Boat (the largest plane in the world) discussing with his flight engineer and radio operator, Dave Evans, the plans for the next day's taxi testing of the 400,000 pound craft. The flight deck occupies the upper level in the nose of the 219-foot hull. The Flying Boat was assembled on Terminal Island in the Los Angeles Harbor.

Transcribed from attached press release: HUGHES TOOL COMPANY Cornerstone of the industrial empire of Howard Hughes is the Hughes Tool Company of Houston, Texas, which last year produced more than half a million rock bits for drilling the kind of deep wells now producing 90 per cent of the world's petroleum. In the company's mechanical testing section (above) engineers test the products under conditions simulating actual drilling. Howard Hughes' father's invention of the rock bit is believed to be one of the most important industrial developments of the century; without such a tool we might still be living in a horse and buggy era."

Transcribed from attached press release: "HUGHES ROCK BIT PRODUCTION more than 500,000 rock bits produced last year by the Hughes Tool Company, Houston, Texas, for drilling the kind of deep wells which now produce 90 per cent of the world's petroleum. The rock bit was invented by Howard Hughes' father and the resulting business became the cornerstone on which Howard Hughes built his industrial empire. The machinist above is performing an operation on the cones which make up the rotating end of the Hughes rock bit." On a production stage decorated with gold platforms and white fog, entertainers perform Act 2: "Hollywood and All That Jazz," Scene 1: "Halo Hi-Jinx" of the show Pzazz! 70 staged by Donn Arden at the Desert Inn Hotel, Las Vegas. Male and female performers pose across the stage as a crowd of people watch from below. While the female dancers are dressed in sparkling, gold two-piece costumes dripping with strings of silver beads and a matching pink headpieces, the male performers are wrapped in twinkling strings of gold beads with a matching gold g-strings and pink capes.

Today," Scene 1: "Jazz, Baby, Jazz," of the show Pzazz! 70 staged by Donn Arden at the Desert Inn Hotel, Las Vegas. Male and female performers pose across the stage as a crowd of people watch from below. The females are dressed in yellow and white two-piece costumes consisting of a short white top and a miniskirt adorned with silver studs. The males are wearing white pants decorated with silver fringe on the sides, yellow scarves tied around their arms, and white scarves tied around their necks.

Le Bourget-- The thoroughness with which he planned the flight and carried it through was still with Howard Hughes when the millionaire flyer and his four companions arrived at Le Bourget, after a record smashing flight across the Atlantic. Hughes is shown here, examining the tail of his plane, just after landing, The tail was damaged slightly. After repairs were made, the fliers took off for Moscow."

New York City-- Howard Hughes, millionaire oil man and speed flyer, in the cabin of his huge Lockheed plane as he waited impatiently for a crew of mechanics to repair one of the motors so that he could take off for Paris. He was forced to give up his plans to leave on July 9th when mechanics found that it would be impossible to change the 18 cylinders of his motors in time. Crews worked all night at the job. Rough spots were found in the cylinders during fuel consumption tests. Credit Line (ACME) 7/10/38 Burs SF."
