Yvonne Fried, M.D., and Joan “Joni” Fried are the daughters of Milton and Esther Fried, the founders of Freed’s Bakery—the standard to which all other Las Vegas bakeries are held. When the Fried family moved to Las Vegas in 1955, Joni was born here, the fifth child, of the entrepreneurial Milton, a musician by night, and his industrious wife Esther, who guided the family business. As Esther’s 2006 obituary reads: in 1959 the couple opened “a snack bar, selling donuts and Danish, at the Panorama Market on West Charleston, while Milt played in the show band at the Sahara Hotel in the evenings.” For Yvonne and Joni, this made for a rather busy and interesting household to grow up in. Their Jewish upbringing was at Temple Beth Sholom. Interviewed by Irene Rostine. Hazel Hedges moved from Kansas City to Las Vegas with her husband and son in 1952. She worked briefly as a waitress in the dining room at the Thunderbird and then became a stay at home mom until her son was in junior high. Then after she went to real estate school, she went to work in commercial real estate at Bond Realty. After that, she passed her brokers exam and transferred to Parkway Realty where she sold land. Her primary success in real estate came from selling houses and investing in land and residential properties personally. After leaving Parkway Realty, Hazel went to work for the real estate office Deshoor, Fair, and Davis, which she eventually bought and renamed Southside Realty. Eventually her son joined her, and they operated Hedges and Wade Realty with two offices, one on each side of town. Hazel also did volunteer work including the Assistance League Las Vegas' Operation School Bell Program, which provides clothing for area school children in need.

Both talk about Joyce Straus? career as artist and art educator, and the influence she had on their lives. Folder of materials from the Mabel Hoggard Papers (MS-00565) -- Personal papers file. This folder contains correspondence addressed to David Hoggard and newspaper clippings about him, particularly in his role as Program Coordinator and Executive Director of Clark County Economic Opportunity Board, and also multiple letters from NAACP Special Contribution Fund West Coast Representative Tarea Hall Pittman. It also includes a name plaque: "J. David Hoggard Executive Director"; Hoggard's U.S. government motor vehicle operator's identification card; Hoggard's business cards for his roles as Advisory Board member for Clark County Community College and sales manager representing Milico; and a fraternity certificate initiating him as a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, May 1, 1954. Volume 6 Issue 2 (May 1981) of "The Rocket!", a newspaper "serving the more than 45,000 older citizens of Las Vegas & Clark County," and a special anniversary supplement from May 1981, are present in this folder but not digitized in their entirety.
