In 1981, Doris Rodriguez (center) moved to Las Vegas from Topeka, Kansas, with her husband and young son. In 1983, her younger sister, Yvette Carrero (right) and her boyfriend moved to Las Vegas from Lorain, Ohio. The next year, 1984, her brother David Carrero (left), his wife and young son also moved to Las Vegas. In 1985, Doris' sister, Elizabeth and her husband moved here with their two daughters from Lorain, Ohio. In the years since moving to Las Vegas, Doris gave birth to another son as did her brother's wife. Such interfamilial migration patterns and subsequent family expansions are responsible in large part for the impressive growth of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Examples of photographic subjects include scenes and closeups of some years of the World Series of Poker tournaments; Horseshoe Casino interiors, exteriors, roadside billboards and renovations; Binion's Montana ranch; and Jack Binion doing promotional giveaways for the Horseshoe.

The majority of photographic items are prints which can be found in black and white as well as color. There are also negatives and contact sheets, almost all of which duplicate prints already existing in the collection.

Description

Raya was born in Tel-Aviv, Israel on July 8, 1935 to Edith and Gerhard Munzner. Her Mother was the daughter of Elsa and David Flachs from Berlin, Germany and her father was the son of Rachel and Zvi Munzner from Mannheim, Germany. Raya's father was jailed in 1931 as a 23 year old attorney, for being "out of the ordinary intelligent, and, therefore, highly dangerous," he was accused of being a communist because he defended social welfare cases. On the day of his release, he fled Germany, crossing the border overnight into Czechoslovakia and onward to Paris to reunite with his then fiancee (Raya's mother) and await immigration papers to the then Palestine, today's Israel. Raya's parents married upon their arrival in Jerusalem and settled in Tel Aviv in 1933. Raya's father obtained his doctorate in Economics and Law at the University of Heidelberg, Germany.
