The Garwood and Joan Van Family Papers (1920-2003) contain scrapbooks, photographs, newsletters, correspondence, and newspaper clippings collected by Garwood Van and his wife Joan Van.The collection includes material on Garwood's music career as a popular band leader in New York, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada as well as material about Joan's early life as a model and dancing career.

Abstract

The Jack Schofield Papers are comprised of Dr. Jack Lund Schofield's scrapbooks, photographs, and awards from 1968 to 2014. Dr. Schofield was a Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) regent, member of the Nevada legislature, and teacher. The scrapbooks document Schofield's involvement with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Aerospace program from the 1960s to the 1990s. The awards and photographs are from NSHE and document Schofield's involvement as a regent.

The Elmo and Charlotte Ellsworth Photograph Collection (approximately 1940-1959) is comprised of black-and-white photographic prints and negatives. The images depict Charlotte and Elmo Ellsworth. Also included is an image of Elmo Ellsworth on horseback at the Las Vegas, Nevada airport for the arrival of the first United Airlines flight and an image of people at the Last Frontier Village in Las Vegas.

Abstract

The Roosevelt Fitzgerald Professional Papers (1890-1996) contain the papers and writings of Roosevelt Fitzgerald, a former University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) anthropology professor and Director of the Ethnic Studies department. Materials include Fitzgerald's educational records, professional correspondence, and documents from his time at UNLV. The collection also contains drafts of his articles on Black history in Nevada and discrimination, newspaper clippings and copies of the Las Vegas Sentinel Voice in which his articles appeared, photographs, and prepared speeches.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Miriam Shearing conducted by Claytee D. White on August 15 and September 6, 2017 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project.

Justice Miriam Shearing is the first female member of the Nevada Supreme Court. She talks about her move to Las Vegas in 1968 and the difficulties she faced early on as a woman in the profession of law. Shearing shares how she successfully became a Justice Court Judge and recalls memories from her time on the Supreme Court. She also talks about her husband, Steven Paul Shearing, an ophthalmologist who invented the lens necessary for Lasik eye surgery.
