Abstract

The Katherine A. Spilde Papers on Native American Gaming include materials collected by anthropologist Katherine Spilde about Native American gaming and the greater gaming industry. The materials date from 1789 to 2015, with the bulk of materials dating from 1995 to 2010. Materials dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are reproductions of key court opinions and treaties concerning Native American rights and sovereignty. The majority of the materials document Native American gaming following the passage of the 1988 Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA). The papers detail Native American gaming enterprises both on and off reservations, the socioeconomic impact of gaming, and the legislative history of Native American gaming in the United States. The papers include research and subject files created by Dr. Spilde during her employment with the National Gambling Impact Study Commission (NGISC), the National Indian Gaming Association (NIGA), and the Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development (HPAIED). The collection includes socioeconomic reports; testimonies; correspondence; memos; press releases; photographs; audiovisual materials; promotional materials from casinos and tourist attractions; brochures; fact sheets; summaries; booklets; pamphlets; advertisements; tourism materials; journal articles; legal briefs; legislative documents; court opinions; Dr. Spilde’s notes; presentations; packets, agenda, schedules, and itineraries from conferences; periodicals; Native American and community newspapers; and newspaper articles. The collection includes materials about over one hundred federally recognized Native American nations. Also included are materials that document the socioeconomic impact of gaming, the international gaming industry, criminal activities related to gaming, advertising about gaming and casinos, lotteries, internet gaming, compulsive gambling, and bankruptcy as a result of gambling.

Abstract

This is part 6 of 6 finding aids for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Creative Services Records (1959-2016). Generally, materials are transferred from UNLV Photo Services to UNLV Special Collections and Archives 5 years after they are created. For materials within the last 5 years, contact photo@unlv.edu or call 702-895-3036. This finding aid contains the thematic slides, contact sheets, and audiovisual materials taken and used by UNLV Creative Services for publicity and promotional purposes from approximately 1959 to 2009. The majority of the materials consist of images from various academic departments, athletics, buildings and historical views of campus, as well as faculty and student life. Also included in the collection are an assortment of print materials, such as theater and music programs, as well as audio cassettes and film reels from anniversary events around campus.

Abstract

The Nevada Federation of Women's Clubs (NFWC) Records date from 1907 until 1999 and document the administration, activities, and publications of the NFWC. During the twentieth century, the NFWC included member clubs from throughout the state of Nevada including the Mesquite Club in Las Vegas, the Reno Women's Civic Club, and the Lamoille Women's Club. The collection includes meeting minutes and agendas, correspondence, publications, reports, and newspaper clippings.

Abstract

The Southern Nevada Gem and Mineral Society Records (1950-2024) contain the records of the Clark County Gem Collectors, Las Vegas Gem Collectors, and the current Southern Nevada Gem and Mineral Society. The collection contains articles of incorporation, by-laws, membership directories, meeting minutes, correspondence, financial records, show paperwork, and award certificates. Also included are photographs of the organizations since the 1970s and digital scans of Gem Times and The Polished Slab newsletters.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Joseph J. Buckley conducted by Patrick Carlton on July 17, 2002 for the Las Vegas Rotary Club Oral History Project. Buckley opens his interview by detailing his participation in the Rotary Club of Las Vegas, Nevada, including offices he held. He then recalls his upbringing in New York through the mid-1950s, his employment at Rockwell International, and the work he did to test components of the Apollo 11 spacecraft. He then discusses moving to Las Vegas in 1969 to become the Personnel Director at the Desert Inn Hotel and Casino and recalls opening his own human resources consulting firm in 1985. He then describes the Rotary Club in more detail including the club philosophy, fundraising auctions, the scholarships they offered, and their short-lived television program. Buckley further talks about the Rotary Club's campaign to eradicate polio globally, events that occurred during his club presidency in the 1980s, and his time as Rotary Club District Governor in 1985. He then discusses overseeing a global Rotary Club convention in Las Vegas during the 1980s, and dealing with a lawsuit filed against the Rotary Club organization for discrimination against women. He recalls his time in Human Resources for the Howard Hughes Corporation, and a lawsuit filed against the Las Vegas hotel industry for employment discrimination against African Americans. Lastly, Buckley talks about the expansion of Las Vegas, the increase the city's population, and labor union relations.

Collection is comprised of the papers of Las Vegas producer, manager, and agent Matt Gregory from 1959 to 1986. Included are contracts, costume sketches, press releases, videos, show reviews, and advertisements. Also included are correspondence, public relations material, business related material, costume and set design drawings and sketches, slides, negatives, photographs, transparencies, and videos, mostly from the 1960s through the 1980s.

The JMA Architecture Studio Project Sheets (approximately 1980-2015) consist of project sheets created by JMA Architecture Studio. The project sheets include project names, descriptions, images and renderings, and awards where applicable, of the firm's work for both realized and unrealized projects designed between approximately 1980-2015. The project sheets are divided into sections on healthcare facilities, public sector facilities, hospitality properties, and commercial work. Most of the projects represented are local to the greater Las Vegas, Nevada area, but also include some national and international projects.
