Shields, Calvin Anthony, 1924-2010

Calvin Anthony Shields was a Las Vegas, Nevada musician who played the trumpet and drums. He was born on April 28, 1924 in Jacksonville, Florida. Shields played with the Billy Williams Quartet in countries around the world, and later formed "The Calvin Shields All-Star Band" and played nightly at the Carver House, located in Westside Las Vegas. He also played in clubs and casinos in Las Vegas including the Flamingo Hotel and Casino, the Sahara Hotel and Casino, the Landmark Hotel and Casino, and the Hacienda Resort Hotel and Casino.

Buford, Eugene

Eugene Buford came to Las Vegas, Nevada from Birmingham, Alabama, when he was two years old with his mother and grandmother. He held a variety of jobs, including washing dishes at the Last Frontier and delivering ice to casinos like the Flamingo and the Stardust, and ultimately retired after thirty-six years with the Post Office. Buford's great grandmother, Mary Nettles, was instrumental in the formation and growth of the NAACP chapter in Las Vegas, and he recalls meetings in her house and his own role as president of the Junior League NAACP.

Genovese, Robert

Robert Genovese was born and raised in Rochester, New York. He arrived to Las Vegas, Nevada for the first time in 1960 with two other musicians and were booked at the Fremont Hotel and Casino. They performed as a band opposite of Wayne and Jerry Newman for five years on a revolving stage at the Fremont. Over the years, Genovese’ music career flourished and he played showrooms in places like Caesar’s Palace Hotel and Casino, the Flamingo Hotel and Casino, and the Driftwood Lounge. He worked opposite of legends such as Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton.

Dennis Chamberland interviews Thomas Barbarite (b. 1932) in his home about his time in Las Vegas and his experiences in the casino industry. Barbarite discusses his time at the Four Queens and the Dunes as a dealer as well as his work as a pit boss at the Flamingo, the Aladdin, and Caesars Palace. Chamberland also asks Barbarite about the changes over time on the Strip, including the disappearance of lounge shows and expansion of larger shows on the Strip. Barbarite also discusses the involvement of the mob in Las Vegas, particularly the influence of Bugsy Siegel in the operation of various properties.
