Description
John F. Cahlan, left, coordinator of Las Vegas' Diamond Jubilee, unveils a plaque at Second and Lewis Streets, the former site of the city's first school. On the right is Ruth Fyfe, a veteran teacher. Originally the Salt Lake Hotel, the building was remodeled and converted to a grammar school in 1905 with about 200 students. The site is now a parking lot.

Oral history interview with JoNell Thomas conducted by Claytee D. White on January 12, 2010 for the Voices of the Historic John S. Park Neighborhood Oral History Project. Thomas discusses working as an attorney with the Nevada Supreme Court, a staff attorney with a Las Vegas, Nevada firm, an adjunct professor at the law school at the University Nevada Las Vegas, and an attorney with the Clark County Special Public Defender's Office. She also discusses living in the John S. Park Neighborhood with her family since 2001.

Abstract

The Evelyn Stuckey Papers date from 1940 to 1972 and document Stuckey's experience as a physical education teacher at Las Vegas High School (LVHS) in Las Vegas, Nevada and founder of the LVHS Rhythmettes dance group. The collection contains personal and educational materials from Stuckey’s college years, personal correspondence, and photographs. It also contains materials documenting the Rhythmettes' activities including travel plans, posters and fliers, news clippings, and group rosters.
