Now, we in this community, I believe, w ill have to protect ourselves in the future and think o f the p o ssib ility of irrigatin g some o f our potential farm land around this area, which would probably run from 15,000 to 25,000 acres. I f that is done, we don’ t have enough water. I f there*s a sizeable industry available to come in this area, we don't have enough water. That's my conclusion on these statements. Now, trying to arrive at a constructive conclusion, regardless of who supplies the water, it has to be supplied i f we are to continue to grow. Has the Las Vegas Land & Water Company, our County and State authorities studied the fe a s ib ilit y of obtaining a supply of water, or having that standby that Mr, Smith talked about, so that i t could be available to this area when i t is needed? I know nothing of the structure o f the Las Vegas Land & Water Company but I do know this - i f we are to have enough of anything, whether i t is heat, power or water, we must have a surplus. Now, a surplus costs money. I f these various agencies studied the fe a s ib ility of providing that surplus, and it becomes available to this community when we need i t , that to me is the crux of the thing. Its a question as to who is going to provide the water and what i t is going to co st. Is that about right, Mr, Smith? 1©, SMITH* I think so, s ir . The community is going to grow, I Just want to repeat — Its going to grow; its going to be developed — whether that development is in the nature of suburban homes, new hotels or industrial plants « we are going to have to supply assured water to people coming in who spend their money here* there's going to be water here a ll the time. One additional thing — Much o f this discussion has been directed toward the Water Company’ s a b ility to supply the water to this community. The Water Company, even at its maximum, doesn’ t supply half the water used in this community. There are many sources of water that are being used now that w ill have to receive attention from the people here. There is less than 50% of the picture in the Water Company, The maximum consumption in August o f this year was — and these figures may be subject to correction — USER GALLONS HER DAY City of Las Vegas.................... ........... ............ ................... 9,500,000 Union Paoifio Railroad.......................................................,1,404,000 Las Vegas Land & Water Company.............................. .... ,iO,&O4,Od)0 Other water producers and water users are as follows* North Las Vegas........ ............... ,*1,200,000 El Rancho Vegas............... ...................... 320,000 Last F ro n tie r,...................... 180,000 Golf C o u r s e ,............. . 150,000 A r m y ................ 703,000 Cemetery................................ 70,000 Mike Paps.............. ...................... *............. .............. . 325,000 Bonanza Road................ ....................................... .. 315,000 Miscellaneous others, estim a ted .....................5 ,7 5 0 ,0 0 0 Total Las Vegas V i c i n i t y , . . . . . , . , , . . , . , 19,927,000 (18)
