g Las Vegas Review-Journal / Sunday, August 19, X95X Governor Endorses Confab In Washington On Water CARSON CITY, Augv 18 (UP) -^Governor Charles Russell said today he believed the next step in the controversy over the Basic Magnesium water system should be a conference in Washington D. c. between the Interested Nevada parties and the general services administration. The governor returned late Friday from a five-day trip to Edmonton, Canada, to attend a highway convention. He said he hadn’t had time yet to study fully the latest developments in the efforts of the Colorado river commission to transfer ownership of the' SMI Water system to the Las Vegas Valley Water district. These negotiations hit a snag this week when the BMI lessees said they could not accept the latest contract proposal worked | out by the CRC and the water: district whereby the water sys-! tern would be turned over to the ' latter. - '? « The governor said he had been informed of what hadi taken place during a public meeting held in Las Vegas last night to discuss the situation. He said the only statement he had to make at the present time was this: “ I feel that is the third attempt that has been made to work out an arrangement by the C o l o r a d o river commission which would be satisfactory to' the water district and to general s e r v i c e s administration and which would still protect, the required amount of water for operation o f the BMI plant facilities. “ Thus far, while no agree- I ment has. been reached which is ; satisfactory to all parties con- ) cerned, I feel that we have made advances toward finding out what we ean do and can not do, thinking in terms of requirements imposed upon us by GSA. “ I have previously advocated and will continue to request-that a meeting of those concerned beheld in Washington to try to find a basic solution to the problem.*1 Russell said he felt such a meeting should include spokesmen for the BMI lessees and the i water district as well as the tall membership of the Colorado | river commission.
