The purpose o f th e m eetin g, p r im a r ily , was t o im press upon the c i t i z e n s o f the c i t y o f Las V egas, the n e c e s s it y f o r w ater co n s e r v a tio n and t o have the o f f i c i a l s o f Las Vegas Land & Water Company e x p la in t h e ir p o s it io n w ith r e s p e c t to the fu tu r e developm ent o f the w ater su p p ly in Las Vegas to take ca re o f a Chamber o f Commerce ant ic ip a t e d in d u s t r ia l grow th. The m eetin g was q u ite f r ie n d ly and the S ta te E n gineer, among o th e r s , made a t a lk e x p la in in g to the o it iz e n s o f Las Vegas th a t the underground w ater su pply was an unknown q u a n tity , th a t a d m ited ly i t was a p p a re n tly b ein g redu ced in e x c e s s o f the r e ch a rg e , and th at ev ery e f f o r t should be made by the o it iz e n s t o a v o id un necessary w aste o f w a ter, pending a p resen t survey and determ inat io n by the S ta te Engineer as t o the methods to secu re an a d d it io n a l w ater su pply from some o th e r s o u r c e . A fte r the sp e e ch e s, the m eeting was turned in t o an open forum f o r q u e stio n s and answers and among the q u e stio n s was one w ith r e s p e c t t o the a t t it u d e o f the Las Vegas Land & Water Company as t o b rin g in g in th e w ater from Lake Mead to th e C ity o f Las Vegas through the e x i s t in g p ip e li n e s now se rv in g the B a sic Magnesium P la n t. Mr. S tron g a d v ised that we had n ever con tem plated u sin g that w ater but the c o s t t h e r e o f would be extrem ely h igh and th at i f the c i t y d e s ir e d th a t w ater to be brought in t o the to w n -s ite i t sh ould arrange t o do so through S ta te o r M u n icip a l a c t io n w ith the F ed era l Government* F or your in fo rm a tio n , c a p it a l Investm ent in th a t p ip e l i n e and pumping f a c i l i t i e s i s about $ 5 ,1 0 0 ,0 0 0 .0 0 and t o b rin g the w ater from the r e s e r v o ir a t the p la n t to the c i t y would p rob a b ly c o s t another m illio n d o l la r s .
