Letter from A. S. Halstead to C. P. Smith, September 23, 1922

Automobiles bought by company during strike. September 23,1922. Mr. C. P. Smith: Referring to your memorandum attached to bills covering rent of automobile used by Nevada State Police and other memoranda covering ammunition and other supplies furnished the State Police: So far as the rent of the automobile is concerned, it was my understanding that Governor Boyle rented this machine on his own responsibility. Mr. McNamee, however, feels that there was reason for believing that we were to hire the machine for the Governor's use. The second-hand Packard machine which we purchased at Las Vegas was to remain our property but to be used by the Governor. The Lincoln machine which we purchased at the Governor's instance was to be taken over by the State and paid for by it. It seems to me that the whole situation should be straightened out in a definite way at this time. I am therefore turning over the bills in question to Mr. McNamee who expects to go out to Las Vegas during the coming week and will ask him to take up the situation with Mr. Renear. Of course we cannot afford to be small about the items of rental of the automobile in question and other matters, but I do believe we should have a system under which the Lincoln car and future supplies, and other things furnished by the company, should be under requisitions, and in other forms which will establish the fact that the State expects to compensate us therefore.
