V Las Vegas, Nevada October 14, 1924, Mr, Fred Knickerbocker, Genl. Mgr, U. P, System Los Angeles, Cal, In r e - New se ttlin g basin and pipe Dear Sir l lin e at artesian w ell. At the completion of our artesian well some months ago, we were required on account of the unprecedented flow of the w ell and sand conditions at that time to construct temporary settlin g basins, also temporary flume from settlin g basins to the intake of pipe lin e leading into the city. P rio r to the time o f completion of the w e ll, there was an appropriation made fo r a certain amount of new pipe lin e 1 work which i t was thought would be adequate at that time, but a fte r striking such flow of water we found that i t would not be, and the appropriation made has not, as I y understand i t , been used. As above stated, these settlin g basins and flume are temporary only, and in my opinion, it is very necessary that we should as soon as possible construct the permanent settlin g basin and carry from th is permanent settlin g basin to the second intake box a 24" Redwood stave pipe lin e , which would evidently relieve us of a ll of our troubles for many years. This 24* lin e w ill aet as a stand-pipe, giving us the required amount o f pressure, which we must maintain for ra isin g of water to the treating tanks in the Las Vegas Yard. I may say that the matter has been worked up and I believe mapped through Mr. Osborne*s o ffic e by Engineer McKee. * I have talked th is matter over with Mr. Rodman o f the Bridge and Building and la te r Service Department, and he is very anxious that we get at this work at once, for i t w ill only be a short time u n til there w ill be both State and City and County Health authorities after us in reference to conditions of the temporary settlin g basin, which has grown fu ll o f tu lie s iand weeds which w ill a fte r the fir s t frost died down, make ir an unsightly vegetable condition in the basin and cause much §1§ W . complaint. | \ -. •>. <? ' W This work can either fee prosecuted fey the ra ilro a d gang, or, . ^ ^ as was spoken o f in a Board meeting with Mr, Calvin la st Spring, I Can handle the same through force account in the same way as new water mains were la id in Las Vegas this;summer. W ill you kindly^advise. Very truly yours, Vice-1RB/MKM President & Agent do- Arthur Maguire
