Salt Lake City, Utah, April 1st, 1903. Mr. J, Ross Clark, Second Vice President S.P.L.A.& S.L.R.R.Co., Los Angeles, Calif. Dear Sir:- Dr. Bracken has shown, me a letter just received from Mr. Me Dermott; also a telegram from you, not to employ a cook until lie could see McDermott. I am also in receipt of a letter from Mr.McCartney, dated Moapa the 29th ult., stating that he is just hack from Los Vegas, and that Mr. McDermott is there in good shape, and has everything in hand on the ranch. I have advised Dr.Bracken to get along the "best he can with what there is on the ranch, and not to ask for anything that is not absolutely necessary. I "believe, however, he should have a man and wife, the man to do the farm work, and the woman the cooking, for the present at least. He should also have a good man to ride the range and look after the cattle. If it "becomes known that a sharp lookout is being kept for cattle thieves it will have a very salutary effect. When you come here next time, why not make the trip overland and see this ranch for yourself, in order to be in a better position to decide what is required there, and also what the possibilities of the place are ? / /I Yours very respectfully,
