T h is shafting is m ade in tw o types called " A ” and “ B ” sections. T h e " A ” section, as pictured in Figure 1, has a flanged "N e e d le B earin g” join t at each end and a splined join t, so its overall length can be increased o r decreased 1 y2" o r m ore. An " A ” section d oes n ot require a steady bearing. T h e " B ” section, see upper section o f Figure 3, has a flanged "N e e d le B earin g” join t at its u pp er end and a plain flanged lo w e r end, requ irin g a steady bearin g just above this lo w e r flange. A n " A ” section alone, as illustrated in Figure 2, can be used w here the distance betw een the pum p and its driver is not to o great. For lo n g e r spans, it is necessary to use o n e " A ” section w ith on e o r m ore " B ” sections above the " A ” section. Special studies must be m ade o f installations requ irin g over 3 " B ” sections. W h en an " A ” section is used alon e o r in con ju n ction w ith on e o r m ore " B ” section s, the lo w e r flange at the pum p can be discon n ected and the " A ” section sw ung to o n e side to p erm it dism antling the pum p. W h ere m ore head ro o m is desired, both the upper and lo w e r flanges can be d iscon n ected and the " A ” section rem oved w ithout distu rbin g the equipm ent above the upper flange. T h e needle bearings o f the universal join ts as w ell as the splined join t are o il lubricated. L oss o f lubricant is prevented by seals. T h e interm ediate guide bearings fo r the B sections are grease lubricated, the same as the pum p. N eith er the pum p o r guide bearings fo r the shaft n or the shafting require add ition o f lubricant except at infrequent intervals. It is not recom m en d ed that grease lines from the m o to r floor to the interm ediate bearings be used as this encourages to o frequent addition o f grease, resulting in ov erloa d in g the h ou sin gs w ith grease. T h e interm ediate guide bearings are SEAL-M ASTER MSF flange m ounted type o r SEAL-M ASTER SP side m ounted type. T h e SP type is used fo r vertical surface m ounted such as the w eb o f a channel. T h e MSF type is used w here the bearin g is to be supported on a horizontal surface, such as a plate spanning an op en in g in a floor o r betw een tw o beams. B earing dim en sion s are sh ow n on page 12. T h ese gu ide bearings are sealed type, single row , deep g ro o v e ball bearings. A felt-lined steel flinger is carried on each side o f the inner race and, in con ju n ction w ith steel inner seals m ounted o n the outer race, m akes an effective seal to prevent the loss o f grease and to prevent dirt getting into the bearing. T h e outer race has a spherically grou n d outer surface and is m ounted in spherical seat in the h ousing. A lo ck in g p in prevents the bearin g rotating in the h ou sin g, yet allow s several degrees o f m isalignm ent. A n A lem ite fitting is p rovid ed fo r relubrication. Set screw s lo ck the inner race to the vertical shaft. It is desirable fo r con ven ien ce o f installation as w ell as m aintenance, that the needle bearin g join t just b e lo w the driver and the flange con n ection betw een the shafting and the driver are accessible from the floor su pportin g the driver. A s m ost m otors and other drivers have flanged bases with n o p r o vision fo r access to the shaft ends, stands to raise the m otors o r drivers above the su pp ortin g floor are generally used. T h e dim en sion s o f W o rth in g to n ’ s standard line o f fabricated steel stands are sh ow n o n page 12. T h e size o f shaft needed can be determ ined from Chart 1 o n page 11 w h ich is fo r continuous duty m otor o r turbine drive. F or m ulti-cylinder 8 0 0 rpm o r h igh er speed internal com bu stion engine drive through righ t angle gears, these same ratings can be used but, fo r on e o r tw o-cylin der engin es and fo r m ulti-cylinder engines b e lo w 8 0 0 rpm , select shafting fo r 1 0 % m ore h orsep ow er. T h e m axim um length o f each shaft section betw een flanges varies w ith the speed and can be determ ined from Chart 2 on page 11. A s lo n g shaft sections can be sprung by careless handling, shaft sections lo n g e r than 120” sh ould be avoided.
