San P edro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad C ompany Sewer System, Las Vegas* Caving in of Cesspools* Mr* J. Boss Clark, Second Vice-President Dear Sir:- ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT A , Building* Replying to your letter of March 22nd* 1912, regarding the caving in of some of the cesspools pertaining to the Company cottages at Las Vegas. Mr* Bettis wrote me that some of the cesspits had caved hut gave no particulars as to the extent of the caving. The pits were dug some six feet or so deep. A foot or so below the surface there was a shoulder left all around the excavation upon which stringers extending across the pit were rested; boards were laid on the stringers and over them was placed a covering of earth. I do not believe the pits were lined with boards, as my files indicate that I had conversations with you upon the subject and that as it was expected the town of Las Vegas would within the year put in a permanent sewer system it was decided that we would only be warranted in using a very temporary style of construction because of the limited time it was then expected the Cesspits would be needed. Caving of pits was probably due to their not being Yours truly, timbered*
