THE U N I V E R S I T Y OF I OWA I O W A CITY, I O W A Department of Anthropology September 211., 197& Dear Charles: Very glad to get year Falcon H ill Woven M aterials report in the m ail th is morning. Jhanks very much. Last week I get a very te s ty le t t e r from Tom W ilson, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. I t was f u l l af a l l kinds of th re a ts, and a copy was sent to the Attorney General of Nevada. &e d oesn 't seem to r e a liz e that Fileon H ill is on Federal Land, and thfct the Museum d o esn 't own the a r t if a c t s , e t c . I sent back a p o lite rep ly jincluding the statement that at that tim e, I d id n 't have your rep o rt. He was planning to write you a te sty l e t t e r , I fir e d o f f a le tte r to him th is morning t e llin g him your report had came in , i f i t catches him, i t w ill save his w riting to you. Now, the had news is that Doris wrote and said that the Board has forced Jim to r e tir e sooner than he expected (October 1 9, so send him a card anyway), th at he is gettin g the ?Bums Rush, and a l l in a l l , a very fead d e a l. I am not surprised a t t h i s , but is is absolu tely unforgivable, and d isp ic a b le . They have no idea what Jim has donee fo r that Museum. I hear th J ^ have hired same new Ph.D. from the East to replace him, and in the meantime, Have appointed Pete Herlan as A ctin g-D irector. Can you imagine that? As a re su lt of a l l t h i s , I am not very keen to have our report published there any longer. I to ld Tom that i t would cost about $10,000 to publish the report, and th a t i f the Museum f e l t i t was too much, I would supply them with a d escription o f the m aterial and lock fo r publication elsewhere. I doubt i f I have heard the la s t of th a t. I am p retty mad about the wholde th in g. Are you going to New Orleans? Hope to see you there. As e v e r ,
